A lot of things have been attributed to our high unemployment rate. Let us also remember that this problem is not just peculiar to our country or region, but it is now a global issue. Some experts have tried to identify the root cause of the problem and these are some of their findings: Our ever-increasing population index; a gross failure in our educational system (a topic for another day); and a government that has failed to seriously provide the basic amenities in place to support industrialization and encourage job creation. First of all, you will agree with me that the crisis of unemployment has created a lot of other problems that have affected in one way or the other every single Nigerian both at home and abroad. The present insecurity and open display of lawlessness can be attributed to this crisis. This has resulted in the mass exodus of Nigerians to other countries where they are treated as plagues and are scorned like lepers because of a well publicized negative international image; a country where nothing works . The crisis seems to be never-ending and we can boldly conclude that the nation is in a period of famine. Famine can be defined as the acute shortage of the basic essentials of life. For a long time Famine has been linked to the agricultural sector alone. Years ago, when farming was the most prominent and the major employer of labour globally, famine was experienced when there was a shortage in food supply due to poor harvest. This affected the country both socially and economically. Everyone had to look for alternative ways to survive at all cost, while some others migrated in search of greener pastures.
Today, when you observe carefully you can see that Famine has affected most sectors of our economy. When people perceive there is a shortage of the essentials of life in the land, selfishness and greed is encouraged. We tend to grab as much as we can so as to survive. That is why corruption is on the increase and has become an accepted way of life. The situation encourages it. Nowadays the ills that were once frowned at are treated with kid gloves and crime which was previously done in the cover of darkness is now boldly entertained in broad daylight. How did our situation get so bad? A period of famine comes with suffering and the pain of suffering creates the need to survive by any possible means that is why our productive young minds have resolved to a life of online crime, and applicants apply for any job even when the position is outside their area of specialization as long as it can provide them with daily bread.
