Decades ago my "History of Mass Media" professor suggested that Hausa should be declared the lingua franca of West Africa (he wanted us to do away with English and French).

The BBC broadcasts in Swahili in East Africa and Hausa in West Africa because these are the most spoken languages in their respective regions.

HAUSA is spoken in the following West and Central African countries:

1) Niger,
2) Nigeria,
3) Ghana,
4) Benin,
5) Cameroon,
6) Côte d'Ivoire,
7) Sudan,
cool Togo
9) Chad,
10) Central African Republic,
11) Equatorial Guinea
12) northwestern Sudan,

YORUBA is spoken in the following West African countries:

1) Nigeria
2) Benin
3) Togo
4) Ivory Coast

IGBO is spoken in the following West and Central African countries:

1) Nigeria
2) Cameroun
3) Equatorial Guinea

Whites have it good.

Particularly the British in this case....see how people are seeking validation using BBC as a yardstick.

Arsenate: Because ibos and yoruba are unimportant in the scheme of things and both have huge inferiority complex. Trying so hard to be western and even jewish. They have identity crisis hence the west don't even take them serious.

IGBO & YORUBA PEOPLE HAS ADOPTED ENGLISH
AS OUR MOTHER TONGUE EVEN AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL
BUT HAUSA PEOPLE ARE SO ADAMANT WITH THEIR LANGUAGE ,
SO, ENGLISH DOESNT HAVE A CHOICE THAN TO BOW TO HAUSA LANGUAGE AND GIVE INFORMATION IN HAUSA LANGUAGE.

I dont know the intention of the OP But i dont get why some people are trying to tribalise this matter after it got an answer in the few first posts!. I simply dont see the use of wasting my time arguing about which tribe is more educated or who speaks english better, something some folks are busy trying to do.

Hausa is widely spoken across west and sub-sahara Africa and also hausa listen to radio often than any other tribe in Africa.i think it is a challenge to other ethnic groups in Africa for a good network of information.proudly NIGERIAN

Darthmaul: True, but why don't we have Africa Magic Igbo?
You have Africa Magic Yoruba and Africa Magic Hausa written on the screen, but none for Igbo.
Because they play Igbo films on the main African magic channel. The rest are like AMY and AMH are sub channels. grin

Exactly. The Hausa/Fulani language and culture is not exclusive to Nigeria . Chad,Cameroon,Libya and as far away as Ghana have a reasonable population of individuals who can identify with the Hausa /Fulani ethnolinguistic grouping
Re: Why Don't We Have BBC Igbo Or Yoruba Service by ektbear: 9:33pm On Apr 11, 2013
Eziachi: Because many Igbos and Yorubas understands spoken English and apart from the Nigerian territory or small portion Bein republic, there are no other place you find the Igbos and Yorubas, unlike Hausa language spoken in over 10 countries. Its simple economic. Market audience.

end of thread.

naptu2: 1) Because Hausa is spoken across much of West Africa.

2) BBC World Service has been adopting cost cutting measures and reducing the number of language services it offers over the past 15 years.

The widely spoken languages like Hausa remain and have 3 programs daily
