Sales for the world’s 100 largest arms producers amounted to $410 billion in 2011, down $1 billion from the previous year’s total as austerity measures in Western Europe and the United States delayed or slowed procurement of some weapons systems, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

And U.S. budget cuts — commonly called sequestration — that began taking effect this month could, unless at least partly reversed, shave more than $500 billion from military spending over the coming decade, said Susan Jackson of SIPRI.
