Drivers of private companies and commercial vehicles who fail to be certified by the Lagos State Driver’s Institute, LASDRI, will soon be sanctioned in line with the traffic law.

Soon, the state government would commence arrest and prosecution of recalcitrant drivers. According to the commissioner, any offender is liable to fines ranging from N50, 000 to N250, 000.

Speaking at the 2013 Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, road safety campaign week entitled: ”Driver’s Health-Key to safe driving”, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, added that from April, 22, 2013, traffic law enforcement agents will embark on arrest of any driver without LASDRI license.

Explaining government’s magnanimity on the need to get certified, Opeifa, warned organisations to comply with the law, adding that most firms deny their drivers opportunity to attend trainings meant to upgrade their skills, as well as further ensure safety on the road.

His words: “we are focusing on voluntary compliance. Over six months, we have been sensitising the public on driver’s documentation exercise. We will commence enforcement on April 22, 2013. Drivers with Guinness, Dangote and corporate organisations are advised to comply as there will be no waiver.

“In order to improve the competence of drivers and ensure the safety of persons on highways, the Ministry of Transportation, has introduced periodic training for drivers through LASDRI for recertification and rehabilitation of professional drivers.

“It is a fact that drivers have the responsibility to be properly trained, licensed and most importantly be physically and mentally fit before going onto the roads. Most accidents on our roads are as result of human error that could be avoided if necessary precautionary measures are put in place.”

On the VIS safety week, Opeifa said it is aimed at further educating motorists and achieving the goals of the government on zero tolerance on unworthy road vehicles.

Nonsense. When will they start registering housewives so that they can improve their skills on taking care of their husbands? And what will be the annual renewal fees?

Ordinarily yes, in reality any clown (including me) can get a Driver's License without having attended one day of driving school. If all commercial drivers (the number 1 lunatics on Lagos roads) learn how to drive PROPERLY, then things will be much saner

National Certification by the Federal Government trumps any certification by any state government. The rights of the citizens of Lagos must not be trampled upon in the name of certification and duplication of responsibilities must be avoided.

Very good. No one should carry trailer, do driving practice for 2 hours and hit the road. Ramming everything in sight. Humans, goats, properties. SMH! Private companies should also be held highly responsible for the accidents their drivers or vehicles cause.

Sign of what we will experience if ACN/CPC takes over from PDP. From frying pan to fire. How come there is no talk towards making the roads to be better instead of death traps they are today?

See people complaining. What Fashola is doing, is it not in line with global best practices.... Is it not the same abroad. What stops you from simply getting the license and live your normal life. If a mad man jam your car, is it not governments responsibility to eliminate such drivers out of the system. Nigerians want change, but they themselves are not willing to change... na wa

Lagos state government is very wicked! Extortion of the highest order! While not get Agbero off the way first and repair the road as way! All they care about is to extort from people. Well, 2015 election is fast approaching, so they need alot of money to bride people hence the extortion.

Who is to be held responsible for bad roads?

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!!!

This is another example of the way Lagos State extort money from its citizens. Is a license to drive not enough

@peterkbaba, this is NOT in line with best global practices and is not the same abroad. This scheme is simply a way to tax companies and commercial vehicle drivers.
