Young man, get something right, the law is very simple. If you pick up a gun or any weapon to rob your fellow human being, the penalty is the same as that of murder or attempted murder so I don't pity the guy. The convict was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and armed robbery, offences punishable under Sections 6(b) and 1(2)(a) respectively of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap. RII Volume 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

In the first count, Julius Aboy and others now at large were reported to have on or about the 4th day of March, 2011 in Warri, conspired with others now at large to commit armed robbery.

In the second count, Julius Aboy and others now at large were also reported to have, on or about the 4th day of March, 2011 in Warri, robbed one Godwin Gwuene of N955, 600, while armed with a gun. The money was said to be Ususu contribution (savings), belonging to workers, serving as cleaners in a company in Warri.

The armed robbery gang, of which Aboy was allegedly a member, ran out of luck when an oncoming vehicle knocked down their getaway motorbike at the scene of the crime, leading to the arrest of the convict and killing of another member of the gang by an angry mob.

Justice Mukoro said the excuse of poverty, which the convict gave as reason of dropping out of school and venturing into crime was not tenable, as poverty was not a licence for criminality.

According to the law, Armed robbery is punishable by death or life imprisonment. Pen robbery has a max of 2 years.

I am not against the deathbyhanging penalty if dem like they can fry him alive but... when is this seriousness in combating crime going to be focused on corrupt politicians and contractors who collect billions for road and housing and use it to for them own urgent needs?

Topic is misleading. I initially felt that the crime did not fit the punishment till it said armed robbery. Crude or not, if you carry a gun and rob people, you put lives in jeopardy and you should be killed... Hanging or firing squad, I have no preference.

And for politicians that rob with the stroke of the pen, jail them and throw the key away. At least they deserve lengthy sentences and should lose any financial gains from such embezzlement.

The politicians no doubt pushed for this law to protect themselves after stealing lawfully. Afterall, their own crime hasnt been pronounced theft/illegal but corruption.

The problem with most of us is a new word i will call "ignoment" from IGNORANCE and SENTIMENT. The Judge handed the guy the punishment prescribed in the LAW. In corruption cases the punishment meted out is that prescribed in the LAW. So we want a Judge to impose a punishment not in the laws to make us happy? What we need to change is the LAW as far as embezzlement and fraud are concerned. A mandatory 20 yr sentence no option of fine and asset forfeiture would be a start. How can this be done? petition you representatives therein comes the ignorance- how many of us know our nass reps? better yet how many know their local govt chairmen. Moaning on nairaland won't change a thing.
