Hardline supporters of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe have embarked on a campaign of violence and intimidation in the aftermath of the country’s elections, the opposition said on Wednesday.

“By yesterday we had received reports of 200 people who have either been assaulted or chased away from their homes or intimidated in one way or another,” said Movement for Democratic Change chief spokesman, Nelson Chamisa.

“Villagers have been beaten, some of our agents and candidates have been tracked and some fled their homes. People are in distress,” he told AFP.

“And the reason they are being given is that they voted the wrong way.”

Chamisa said the reports of violence had come from across the country, adding the “retribution is massive.”

Although there has still been no official word on the outcome of a presidential election on March 29, Mugabe’s ZANU-PF has already lost control of parliament.
