tess22: Walk The Talk: Ban Daytime Movement Of Fuel Tankers And Trailers In Nigeria! From akinwaleok: From Okada to KeKe to Trailer to Tanker. What have u started or tried in ur life? Truckers and trailers move the nation, not trains, ACN, PDP, and Airplanes. I wonder if you have put so much on what it takes to move a bag of garri from Edo to Lagos or what it take deliver a gallon of PMS from Lagos to Katsina. Ask the govt to fix roads, railway and enforce existing traffic laws. |

The problem with truck drivers go beyond their time of operation. Their truck stations are filled with bars and shekpe joints. Talk about drivers way beyond rational alcoholic limit, if such limit exists. More over, if you drive at night in Nigeria you will notice that most of these trucks have high beam halogen lamps mounted on the vehicles and will never dim/turn off those light for oncoming vehicles. The driver of the oncoming vehicles may be blinded by the beam resulting in head on collision and the attendant deaths. Also, at night you will notice that most of these trucks have no functioning tail/rear lights. Some of them put out so much smoke that before you fathom out their exact location, the inevitable has happened. And we mourn. The main problem is that Nigeria has numerous law enforcement officers that don't have the slightest clue of their responsibilities, duties, obligations, etc. And when they do, they are nonchalant about it or worse, let bribery becloud their judgment. Recommendation: 1. Since Nigeria police is a money-hungry outfit, empower them and/or Road Safety to impound any vehicle with non-functioning tail-lights or over-functioning headlamps. Minimum amount to reclaim such vehicle = N100k. The more stringent the bail conditions, the more they will obey the law. Remember, Nigerians can only learn the hard way. |

The one that happend at ph last year happened at night,a tanker driver lost control and most people were roasted while sleepin. Night movement is also a bad idea! |

[quote author=pekelepekele][color=#000099][b]I had a deep thought about it that maybe banning of trailers , heavy trucks and Fuel tankers movement during the day will reduce accident rate but I arrive at the conclusion that it won't work! and it is even better if they are moving by the day than night . First , Imagine a fuel tanker having a break failure at night and then entering into the street filled with houses and it caught fire , The number of causalities including houses and properties that will get lost will be greater than that of the night . Most people will already be aslept ,before they call for fire service and before the people living in the burning houses get any attention they would have died from fumes from the fire and also with the state this country fire service is , That they don't even work properly during the day probability that they will work at night is zero if we won't lye to ourselves . I mean sh1t happens but nobody pray for it. Second , I have been driving around now with my own vehicle during the day and club , bars at night I can boldly tell you that those heavy trucks , tankers and others you see driving slowly during the day doesn't do that at night in fact most teenagers would have come to the conclusion that those heavy trucks and tankers can't speed at all because the way they move during the day. It's a big lye ,Those tankers you see are responsible for the death of people you see by the road side in the morning or either inside the gutter because the rate at which they speed during the night and even with only single head lamp or none at all with their big horn . it's just too dangerous for this big trucks to be moving at night, In addition their won't be road safety officers at night to challenge them if they have no headlamps and if they are against any traffic law , they can even collide with each other and one of them speed off . Bad roads is also another great problem their are some roads you will drive through during the day and you will think you have known the road better to drive fast through it at night without knowing that the few hours between the time you passed through that road and the time you are returning from the place you went , Their could have been some new pot holes created by either accidents or heavy rain and if any tanker driver had that same thought and speed through a pot hole it would be an accident.) Need I say more, all heavy equipment operators over 18,000LBS needs special training and those trucks must pass bi-annual safety inspection...period. |

Nightshift: The federal government must not delay in putting to an end the carnage caused on our roads by truck and tanker drivers. The influx of technically questionable Chinese trucks have equally worsened the accident situations on Nigerian Highways. Let them ply the roads from 7pm to 6am only. I suggest 9pm to 6am. By 7pm, small vehicles still operate... |

Thanks dear Nairalanders for all the comments, both for and against the campaign. They are very revealing and helpful. I decided to start this campaign because I was tired of saying "R.I.P to the dead" I was tired of doing nothing. I was tired of the news of yet another fuel tanker/ trailer accident and the anguish of another family. While it is true that banning them during the day may cause some economic problems, should we continue to die like flies just because we want to maintain some 'economic' standard? These men, women and children had hopes, they were loved and valued by their family and friends. Please put yourself in their shoes. Why do we demand explanations and investigations into air crashes? Why do we make so much noise about those very sad and unfortunate accidents, but refuse to do same over road accidents? Why? In just this month of April, at least five such accidents have been reported, with the minimum having 5 people killed. Just one month! 6th April, 2013 – Over 20 people crushed to death in an accident involving a trailer and two buses. 6th. April 2013 – Over 60 people burnt alive along Benin-Lagos expressway in commercial and private cars. Two children in a mechanic workshop were among the victims. 6th April, 20 persons killed in an accident at Potiskum, Yobe State when a mass transit bus rammed into an articulated vehicle a.k.a trailer. April 14th, the Abuja-Lokoja road witnessed yet another fatality in an accident between a Volkswagen Golf car and an articulated vehicle leaving 7 people dead April 15th, 5 people were killed when two private cars collided with an articulated vehicle along Asaba-Onitsha expressway April 25th, 5 dead when a trailer collided with a bus in Anambra state |

plssssss, am a trailer driver. Do you know how many of my colleagues that have lost there lives to armed robbers due to night journey, they best thing is for all those taxi drivers and okada riders to avoide trucks, trailers work with air, if there is any air leakage it can lead to break failure. Last month i was drivn an okada man from know no whr jumped in front of me in other to avoide him i matchd break wit full force and one of d air pipes pulled out, i had to pull inside bush, if not i could have crushed people and buildings, always give way for trucks or govt should provide a special lane for trucks. |
Re: Banning Of Daytime Movement Of Fuel Tankers And Trailers In Nigeria Campaign! by tess22: 9:17pm On Apr 28, 2013 |
@Galaxydon, I appreciate your comment. I am not asking for a ban because I hate tanker drivers, they are also very precious to their families and do not deserve to die needlessly. Perhaps if you guys drive at night, you won't be bothered by other reckless motorists and okada men? I just want safer roads just like we demand for safer air travel. More suggestions please. Thanks |

It is very irritating to see people on Nairaland with first to comment attitudes & other crappy things when burning issues of national importance are being discuss. However, I personally think it's because we don't have shared values in Nigeria. What we need is Good enforcement of all our traffic rules. Restricting the movement of petroleum trucks to night may do more harms than Good. There movement can easily be monitored at the day time than night by law enforce officers. |

As long as we the 'ordinary masses' turn a blind eye to issues that concern us, the government and its agencies will do the same. Why? E no concern them, simple. The FRSC, as hard as they have tried, have not done enough to enforce sanity on our roads, we can't afford to keep waiting for them. If you are bothered enough about this incessant horror on our highways, you will sign the petition. You don't have to live in Nigeria to be bothered by this carnage, you don't need to have lost a dear one in an accident. You just need to be have a heart, to know that it could have been anyone. Stopping further avoidable accidents is simply the right thing to do. https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/the-minister-of-transport-nigeria-ban-daytime-movement-of-fuel-tankers-and-trailers-2 https://www.facebook.com/StopFuelTankerAccidentsNow Twitter (@StopRoadCarnage) Thank you! |

sammie-d:You took the right words out of my mind...When traffic rules can't be obeyed during daytime or working hours. Night periods would be like driving like "you alone on the road". I pity innocent sleeping families that would not wake up to their cremation because they have been burnt to ashes from their sleep. They should NEVER be allowed to drive at night and stricter road regulation/use should be introduced to them. Like, having all tanker, trailer owners registered alongside their drivers and in any case of such occurrence, the company should be heavily fined, company license or registration revoked or suspended, all company trucks grounded and then in a case where the driver survives, he should be jailed. |
Re: Banning Of Daytime Movement Of Fuel Tankers And Trailers In Nigeria Campaign! by redsun(m): 11:00pm On Apr 28, 2013 |
It is not just banning them for driving in the day, nigerians should start bringing to book those that make the roads death traps. Those that are responsible in keeping the roads safe must have explanations for not doing so. Federal road safety and the police should be held accountable for taking bribes from wayward drivers and turning blind eye to waywardness ad unruliness on nigerian roads. Nigeria must create road traffic rules, regulations, signs and drivers must learn to drive before they are lisenced. |
