For peace and unity to continue to reign in Nigeria, leadership of organised labour should not allow itself to be manipulated by politicians who are pursuing their selfish interest.

President Goodluck Jonathan made this appeal on the occasion of the nation’s centenary May Day rally which held at the Eagle Square in the Federal Capital Territory, on Wednesday.

The President identified the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as a strong voice that has not in any way compromised its stand on any issue that bothers on the development of the country. He called on the labour union not to relent.

Earlier the President of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwaheed Umar had taken on the Jonathan administration on the issues of corruption, unemployment and insecurity describing the pardon it granted a former governor who enriched himself with Nigerian money as unfortunate.

On security in the land the labour leaders called on members of Boko Haram sect to accept the amnesty offer by the federal government saying that the destruction of Nigeria offers no way forward for anyone.
