Trying to decide what is best for my situation. I would like to be able to Host my site as well as sharepoint/Project management and source control tools on a server but having a hard time deciding which is cheapest and best to go with. Need some sort of input from persons with experience in this area on how best to go about this.

This will depend on your bandwidth, disk space and processor needs. If your website is a new one, chances are that the traffic is low and so a VPS will comfortably accomodate all your needs for now. Since you're kobojunkie, I'm sure you'd love the dollars saved.

Problem is Can I host Sharepoint or even Subversion on a Virtual Server??
Re: Virtual Server Vs Dedicated Server. by syskay(m): 2:57pm On Apr 16, 2008
VPS is a good choice for those who want to move a step higher from the conventional shared hosting. However, it does have its limits, as you will be sharing server resources with other VPS users.

If you can afford it, go for a dedicated box.

I believe you are not sure, because you do not need any. Frankly speaking, the services you require to be able to make use of your software has minimum requirements, and i think you should be aware of that.

But if we are talking about hosting sharepoint services, you need a minimum of a vps server, and not just any, a well configured one to meet the softwares requirement.

Kazey thank you, Well you can be using VPS and not share same resource with ur clients, Syskay i don't agree with that. My poster go for VPs or DS depends on what you wanna do, A Friend of mine bought a Dedicated Server just because he was to run an SMS Gateway software on it and a Create A website for SMS online.

Smartsoft,

Please don’t post what you do not know. VPS stands for “Virtual” Private Server. Some providers configure as much are 20 VPS clients on one server, so that is why I talked of limits. It means you are not alone on the box because the server resources (especially processor) are rationed between all the users.

Yes but servers used for VPS usually have a very high spec, e.g quad processors, 8GB + rams, remote mysql and tunings etc. It really depends, but as far as i know, dedicated servers for personal use, especially for just one service is just a waste of money, except you get them really cheap, but hec that comes with a price too.

But I mentioned that I need it for more than one thing. I want to host a website or two, some web services definitely, Subversion and sometime later sharepoint. The reason why I want to move from my local machine to networking is so I can make information available to more than just people in my location and my time zone. Is VPS the best for this business move or is a Dedicated server the best way to go.

Here is the link provided on the topic "Virtual Hosting versus Dedicated Hosting: which is right for you?"

Largest company use Dedicated hosting server, because it has VERY LARGEST database file and HEAVY broadband traffic. For example a major credit card issuing firm, i used to work when i was college student on experimental college career off-campus. I was involved working with my top management whom they had chosen me as trial system conversion helping system techinicans understanding what the managers want that department software package. It has over 2 millions customers to keep track of credit tracking system with 5 different database systems to retrieve the data under 25 different departments. All departmental login system access to the database ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT for security reason. So you can understand why the difference between virtual hosting server and dedicated hosting server

I use multiple domain Virtual Hosting that comes with private DEDICATED IP ADDRESS package. Because I have more than 2 domains URLs and many different MySQL databases i own to access with. (5 domain URLs and 10 MySQL databases to keep track together, same domain registrar on different hosting server)

In my opinon, it is cheaper to have multiple domain Virtual Hosting with unlimited MySQL database server and private DEDICATED IP ADDRESS (extra nominal charge) than DEDICATED HOSTING SERVER.

I am more concerned about being able to host my source control app on it actually. I want to get gantt and subversion on a server somewhere but at the same time use the same server for other things. I was told I could not use just a host account and I have seen good deals on both virtual and dedicated servers out there. I mean about $50 a month.
Re: Virtual Server Vs Dedicated Server. by uspry1(f): 1:13pm On Apr 17, 2008
Mine with multiple domain virutal hosting server with adding private DEDICATED IP ADDRESS is $24 a month. It has unlimited MySQL database, unlimited email account, and many more. Largest GB storage capability they have.

@kobojunkie

Please correct me if I am wrong, do you mean you have many different server host account separately such as gnatt, subversion, and sharepoint that you want putting them together one server to keep track of?
Re: Virtual Server Vs Dedicated Server. by Kobojunkie: 1:20pm On Apr 17, 2008
No

When I say Subversion ,  I mean I want to host it on a server. It is a source control application I would like to have online. Source of like Sharepoint. I am eyeing whichever one of the two turns out to be better for me and the best deal I get. Gantt is a project management tool as well. I figure if I need subversion then I could package it with gantt and a website and get my money's worth on whichever deal I decide to go with but want to know if I should for this go dedicated all the way or just stick to VP for all. I am trying to avoid having to get so many as it all adds up in the end.

@kobojunkie

Hmmm!!! I googled for Gantt and Sharepoint! I find it interesting that you are using MS Project/Business software package that support both Gantt and Sharepoint.

Even though there are hundreds of web-based database-driven Gantt-clone or Sharepoint-clone that was developed by programmers/web developers. Usually open-source as well as commerical ones.

I was working on creating an extranet MySQL-driven Subcontractor Project Management that is designated for project manager dealing with subcontractor-employees (programmer, designer, SEO specialist, etc.). It contains timesheet record, design and analysis, project status, and user login.

Unfortunately the supervisor-BOSS was FIRED due to poor communication skill and government procurement she do not know NOTHING! She cannot handle doing her job, depend on me and non-technical graphic artist who are contractors. Contract ended promptly with paid!

Well, since you are good at googling for these , can you find me a product out that that is both cost effective and allows me to gain both gantt and sharepoint or subversion features without requiring that my subscription be open source??
