UPDATE: Boko Haram Contact Borno Elder Statesmanmonguno's Family, Make Demands by phoneport(m): 2:28am On May 04, 2013
The kidnappers, who snatched the elder statesman and former Minister of Petroleum,
Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno, have contacted the family and demanded the release of
some of their members who are being held by the security forces. Confirming the incident, Munguno's son disclosed by phone that the kidnappers have made contact with the family, demanding not money, but freedom for some of their members being detained by the government. It is to be recalled that Friday, unknown gunmen kidnapped the former Nigerian minister,
Shettima Ali Monguno.

The incident took place in the restless city of Maiduguri, Borno State capital. Mr. Monguno, of the respectable age of 87, was snatched by the gunmen as he left the mosque in the Mafoni Ward area of the city after Jumat prayers. Mr. Monguno is a vocal and influential politician, as well as educationist.
The reasons for his kidnap are yet to be determined. Earlier this week, the Joint Military Task Force, which is responsible for keeping peace in the region, issued a warning that the extremist Boko Haram sect had plans to embark on kidnappings for ransom. Most residents, angered by the brazen seizure of the old man, prayed for his safe release, but also for Almighty Allah to punish the perpetrators. Two weeks ago, the sect also reportedly made $3.5 million from kidnapping a French family
in Cameroun.

Elder statesman and former Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno, was a Federal minister for Air Force and internal affair (1965-66), Federal commissioner for trade
and industries (1967-71), Minister of mines and power, petroleum and energy (1972-75). He is known as a consistent critic of the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the federal government.

More details later.
