THE Federal Government has approved the sum of $3.7 billion for the power sector to improve its transmission lines, so as to be able to wheel 20,000 megawatts of electricity.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, who disclosed this at a meeting with Nigeria-Canadian Association of Greater Toronto area, in Canada at the weekend, said the money was approved last week.

Speaking at an interactive session, he explained ongoing efforts at improving infrastructure in the country, noting that “President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration is committed to ensuring adequate power supply, improvement in transportation, aviation, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) , agriculture, health care services, education and good governance.”

While pointing out the contributions of Nigerians in diaspora to national development, Sambo implored them to return home and be part of the effort at transforming the country.

He noted that it was in recognition of their contributions that a diaspora bond of N1 billion was set up.

Earlier, the president of the Nigeria-Canadian Association, Fabian Nwoha, had expressed the desire of the association to contribute positively to the development of the nation, noting that they had been discouraged by negative stories emanating from Nigeria.

However, he observed that with the new developments being witnessed in the country, they were confident in the ability of the government to deliver on promises.

Nwoha reminded government of its promise to provide a Consular office in Toronto, so as to help ease emerging diplomatic issues.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada, Dr Ojo Maduekwe, commended the association.

Who came up with this estimate? How was the figure arrived at? How do we know it's not inflated? Where will the funding come from? Over what time frame will this be completed? What checks are in place to prevent misappropriation? Who will supervise the use of these funds?

Most importantly, WHEN WILL NIGERIANS FEEL THE IMPACT?

More questions than answers.

Anytime i see stories like...I'll just forget about the fact that it'll be executed

Anytime the govt of nigeria comes out τ̲̅ȍ say stuffs like this..they are only letting bigger thieves know that such an amount of money ιѕ available for 'em τ̲̅ȍ steal

Λn∂ then again we could recall what GEJ said in one of his trips last year that in the first quarter of this year there would be steady power in industrial states. But here we are the нαѕ been the case.

Let's just continue τ̲̅ȍ hope as we always have.

Pls we don't need any stable power again. Let's share the money equally and we all will handle power supply individually. Haaba!

Very GOOD moves.

Provide alternative funding for the Transmission Infrastructure, now managed by Manitoba International. That shiit is currently the weakest link in Nigeria's Power chain

Everytime f.g is always approving billions of $$ still electricity is still highly epileptic, the amount of money spent to improve power since 1999 is enough to build a nuclear station

Good questions no doubt.

But check this: Why is it that when it the feds, you ask this question but never do same about your state governors.
A large chunk of our expenses are expended by states and LGAs and nobody cares to look their way.

This government keeps impressing with its gaint strides, big kudos to GEJ for the efforts so far..A lot of deluded people around with unrealistic expectations is challanging enuf, the resilence being show by the government is very commendable...
I think people have a lot to learn for Mr.President, when it comes to managing near crisis situations

The answer to your question is simple. We run a unitary system IN PRACTICE, where the Feds control 52% of national revenues. Besides, the FG has the monopoly of power transmission and distribution, meaning there's nothing to "ask" the states and local govts as far as the power sector is concerned.

When we reform our economic structure to make states viable economic units, then we'll be better equipped to hold governors accountable.
