It actually depends on what's driving you, if you wanna develop that great app that you want everyone 's going to be using probably before December, then you are on a long thing. But if you wanna learn programming, because someone tells you to, or you feel that you need it, then you are also on a long thing.

Programming takes passion, and if you dont have that then you would just be reading something that you would never make use of( like seriously wasting your time; like an obsession).

But if have passion for it(programming) then you need to understand that you have to read some random nonsense at least for the next couple of months. And if you have a tutor, that also would have been great.
Either way, the first you need is passion if you want to be a 'real-time programmer'

To the best of my understanding, that would take time, bbut i can assure that you should be building something productive in the next couple of months( say 5Months).

According to one microsoft Evangelist( Mr. Oyetoso), he would say "the best time to plant a tree was 20years ago, the next best time is now". You do not really need a tutor to be great. What you just need is a mentor, someone that would tell you what to study first and what to study next, till you get to the last one.

Firstly you need a plan. i can't draw that one out for you, but you definitely need one.
The next thing is reading.

I personally do not believe in learning on the Job, you need to do a lot of studying before you can put up your first app.

I can see that you are high on spirit( from you post) because you would definitely need a lot of those if you really wanna succeeded as a world class programmer.

If you would care to know, am not a world class professional, all i have written here are just some MOO( my own opinion).
God Bless you

if you wanna learn programming - first invest a lot researching it by urself.. you need no hand holding.
many programmers they are who are completely self taught.
get a computer
go on the internet
read
practice
write small programs
repeat process

actually, if you dont stop (whch is what discouragement will have you do), success bcomes automatic.
when i started , i posted large quotes in my room and around the computer and in the toilet
(wud hav put in the bath room but they'll be no time to stare for long as is the case in the john)
- "despair makes you wanna stop"
when i saw it, and the feeling to quit rose,i mustered courage to continue.
now ,that phase is history.

@ Kennyinusa

I personally do not believe in learning on the Job, you need to do a lot of studying before you can put up your first app.

This got me think as well, how is this not a good practice, i applied the above in designing ID card from database using php, css and mysql. boy it was really tasking but it surely helped me achieve my goal at the end and personally, it has giving me the urge to use that same zeal of learning on the job to apply to android apps development now.

So if you might explain further to help me see what you are saying in a fresh light..thanks

My candid advice is: just keep reading. Dont go to any classes, dont watch tv again, rarely play games. FORGET EVERY OTHER THINGS OF THIS LIFE. Dump ya girlfriend (or beg her to dump u) cos no man can serve 2 masters, get a laptop or pc, a good internet connection, and at least 8 hrs of steady electricity. Lock yourself in your room allday, everyday.

Download all books u see about java online. READ THEM ALL (all the authors have different perspective of the language so u have to know them all). You will read some garbage along the line but that is part of the sacrifice.

The truth is you will lose a lot in life maybe even lose some or all of your friends in the process but hey ITS JAVA we are talking about here(nothing else matters).

people will call u names like nerd, geek, blah blah blah. Dont be discouraged. Set ur eyes on the final reward.
If you can do this for AT LEAST A YEAR(depending on your IQ), i bet u will come back here and give a wonderful testimony in the name of James Gosling, bjarne stroustup, "our Lords" grin

This was how i learnt java.

Cheers

In my opinion, learning any programming language is not very difficult. The difficult part is learning and mastering the various frameworks associated with the language.
