Pope Francis broke the record for declaring new saints yesterday as he canonised more than 800 Martyrs of Otranto. But the move was questioned by an oncologist who challenged the “miracle” attributed to the new saints.
The Pope, in his first canonisation, made saints of Antonio Primaldo and 800 fellow Christians who were massacred by the Ottoman Turks in 1480 for refusing to convert to Islam. At a stroke, he beat the record of 91 saints created by Pope John Paul II during his 27-year reign.
The only Otranto martyr whose name is known is the cobbler Antonio.
