IMSU Expels 60 Students With Grade Point(cgpa) Of Less Than 1.00 by jayiyke007(m): 8:17am On May 13, 2013
No fewer than 60 students of the Imo State University
(IMSU) Owerri, including some in their final year who
made below 1.00 cumulative grade points average
have been expelled from the institution, while students
who made above 1.00 but fell below 1.5 grade points
for the 2011/2012 session were reportedly asked to
repeat a session.
We gathered from a reliable source that the action
which caused tension and confusion in the institution
was one of the policies introduced by the new Vice
Chancellor of the institution, Professor Ukachukwu
Awuzie, the immediate past Chairman of the Academic
Staff Union of Universities.
While some students hailed the new policy, others
denounced it, urging the VC to rescind it.
A female victim of the new policy (name withheld) said,
“my fate has been sealed as my parents would
obviously disown me if the report gets to them, where
will I start from?”
All efforts to reach Awuzie for comments proved
abortive as he was said to be presiding over the
University Senate meeting, but a source in his office
insisted that the former ASUU boss initiated the idea as
part of his efforts to rescue the institution from the
poor academic situation perpetrated by past
administrations.
He emphasized that the society would not be better if
schools continue to churn out students who cannot
defend their certificates, saying that with Awuzie
presiding over the school affairs, the students must
work hard to pass their examinations.
Come to think of it, why would a university student
have a CGPA of less than 1.00 (in a 5.00 scale) after
four (4) good years? Now air your view(s).
