If he was a titled man, then I assume the traditionalists have a higher hand. Do you know the rites that went into giving him that title? There may have been some diabolical machinations involved.

If Achebe took a title, he should have known how the bburial rites are for titled people and informed his family. This is Africa, tarditions were here before the coming of Christianity, they will not change now.

The wife must have followed him to get the title, now that repecussions have come , she remembers she's a christian.

Abeg make him village people bury the guy, if say him papa no carry am go church, dem for claim am?

daylae: Why not just give the dead to the family and stop the unneccessary ranggling. A man like that would have loved a "no show" quiet burial, comprising of family and friends.
A man with a title in Igbo land, is something of a celebrity...he loses all rights to a 'quiet' burial

I'm an Igbo man that's also deep in my culture. Never have I heard nor seen such practice except in instances of oath taking. If the dead is believed to have been murdered, all the suspects would undergo that ritual and take an oath of innocence. If Achebe took the Ozo title then he will be buried sitting upright on a throne in an Ozo burial chamber after undergoing the necessary rituals. The picture below depicts that.

Any one who believes this bull needs a lecture on common sense. Why in the world would ANY tradition ask a woman to srink the water rinsed off a corpse? Abeg the punch got their information from some Nigerian movies and did not bother checking said facts.

Actually when it comes to burials the Umuada is even stronger than the men, they have the biggest say in whatever happens and their word is law. I doubt the umunna would even try to join words with them at that time. This is because the women use that time to harsh out their grievances and arguments from earlier times.

Also let us not forget that in many traditions the world over burying chiefs with their slaves and wives happened at one time or the other. It is thus very belittling for the punch to carry one part of a culture from an ancient era and paste it as a current and common occurance.

Let him loose the traditional rights then! Of what use is a dead man with traditional title? Achebe should be buried in a Christian way. The traditionalists can go ahead with their own burial rites without the corpse.

How could you, even unto death? Don't you have a conscience, don't you have manners? Don't you have human sympathy?.

@Op, I really do hope that the road where he sustained the crippling accident has be repaired? Again, why were all these cosmetic arrangements done for him when he was alive? Must we always do these for the dead?

The perennial debate over tradition and culture returns.

To the emboldened portion of your post....I ask, at what point, precisely, do we allow tradition (the subset) to be subsumed by culture (the super-set)?

Is it conceivably that one can forgo certain traditions while maintaining complete fidelity with "culture"? Or is this view a contradiction in itself?

Guess he was an Nze n'Ozo then. Don't you think this rich culture should be retained whether we are Christians or not?

Lmao @ the bolded.

Why do churches always like looking for trouble where there's none? Culture is a person's identity and definitely far superior to foreign religions. Let the man "rest in peace" at the bosom of his ancestors and their afterlife.

Anyway, when I die, bury me in black Africa like my black ancestors with black sand in a black casket! wink

Of course it should be retained. My grandfather was an Nze n'Ozo and a Pagan during his lifetime. When he was about to die, he repented and became a Christian at the dying minute. He was given holy communion few hours to his death. So you see, our culture should be retained but Christianity comes first.
