Gentle Naaz: U people wr late in ds aproval; mean while, GEJ's declaration has already bn backd up by action prior 2 ds late senate's approval.
So if you country is at war you wait for senate to approve before mobilizing troops. I think everything is in order as per the declaration except the constitution says otherwise.

The position of the ACN is exactly what it should be. If Emergency Rule succeed, so be it - its the choice of majority of Nigerians like me. But if a year or two pass and the military are still in charge, Emergency Rule expands to many other states, pictures of innocent Nigerians killed and and bombs going off in some other regions of the country - Then support for this rule will diminish. If Nigeria and our Democracy remain, then the opposition can say "Here is a better approach".

Me I did support surgical approach that involves arresting and prosecuting the already indicted individuals, gather more Intel and take out sponsors/leaders/bases of this group - without enveloping or declaring an entire region under martial law.

I'm trying to remember the last time the presidency and the senate agree on an issue. The agreement of these two arms of government clearly shows that the emergency rule is the best choice for now. God bless Nigeria.

Pakonte: senate approves state of emergency in three states...i dnt think dis ll improve d lives of so many graduates roaming d streets lookin for meagre jobs to get involve wif for sustenance...i hate dem senators

Nobody is talking about graduates and employment here.... We are talking about the security of life and properties of Nigerians... People have to be alive before talking of job.... And mind you, no govt in this world can provide job for all of her citizens so if you are waiting for govt job to take you from the street you may spend the rest of your life on the street

ukemilia: What wud av happened had they rejected it when our soldiers are already in d battle field.

What would have happened is very simple. The soldiers and the police will withdrawal from the states completely and then the Boko Harams will have a field day killing every human being up North. INEC will not hold election in North-East and North-West of the country by 2015 and the fate of GEJ will be decided by votes from North Central, South West, South East and South South grin grin grin grin

GEJ was right on point for taking a bold step to bypass those lazy NASS crooks with notin to offer Nigerians..there are issues dat mr president needs expedite actions and not necessarily hearing from those NASS crooks. So unfortunate his action was belated.

ukemilia: What wud av happened had they rejected it when our soldiers are already in d battle field.
What would happen if they reject d emergency rule is that Boko boys will begin to kill them one by one. Who wants to die?
Re: Senate Approves State Of Emergency by koruji(m): 4:14pm On May 21, 2013
Get off your foolish horse. ACN has been right a hundred times while GEJ slept on duty as 1000s of innocent lives were wasted by BH. But for the serious challenge to GEJ's misrule by ACN/Tinubu GEJ would have simply continued his "I don't give a damn" attitude and continue travelling around the world pretending that his country is not going down in flames. The man even has the effontery to go telling the world that Nigeria is safe for investments - but now suddenly acknowledge facing a major rebellion. You people should hide your faces in shame.

karl max: Shame on tinubu and AC-N. now that the senate has approved the state of emergency!.
Re: Senate Approves State Of Emergency by Nobody: 4:31pm On May 21, 2013
Wsdm: A nice move. But do they have any option? Have they not been a rubber stamp senators. If not for mediocrity, how can all the senators approve a particular thing without anyone having a contrary view no matter how good it is?
One senator opposed it. That is democracy.
Re: Senate Approves State Of Emergency by crackhaus: 4:45pm On May 21, 2013
I'm sorry but is presidential priviledge not supposed to bypass a senate hearing on situations as declaring martial law (also interpreted as state of emergency)? Its almost like seeking senate approval on going to war..
I might be wrong here but that's really what I think
Re: Senate Approves State Of Emergency by Tonnymc: 4:48pm On May 21, 2013
That's just the best and only option the Senate has now. This should not just be seen as the President's 'thing', but a collective national statement against terrorism. We should all put aside our political inclinations and sentiments, and support any move that will guarantee peace in our dear country.

Ptimes: The Senate on Tuesday approved the State of Emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe States.

The 100 senators present unanimously approved the president’s declaration at a session of the whole house.

The Senate had earlier gone for closed door session to debate the matter. At the end of the closed door session, the committee of the whole Senate unanimously approved Mr. Jonathan’s declaration; with none of the senators present opposing it.

Read details here: http://premiumtimesng.com/news/135300-breaking-news-nigerian-senate-approves-state-of-emergency.html

What was teh price tag, how much was shared or promised in the closed-door meeting. The Nigeria I know, some people will just appear belligerent so tha they will be settled. You may never know all that really transpired. As they say, 'Let assume that everything that bit at night was a mosquitoe. That way, we woun't ask too many question'

ZUBY77: What kind of law approves something that has been going on for days?

As far as i am concerned, state of emergency was declared days ago and half of the boko boys have already been netted by JTF

I think the retroactive approval provided in the constitution recognises the emergency nature of any such proclamation.

Immagine the Senate debating for one week before Jonathan sends troops to these areas, Boko Haram will re-adjust and either ambush the soldiers or relocate

in fact it will defeat the purpose of SOE

Nice one from the Nigerian Senate. Thank God it was was not reduced to a partisan or regional or religious matter.
