Traffic lights to replace roundabouts on a so-called expressway?? same dumb idea..sorry

Well I am happy you said "so-called", while referring to the Lekki-Express way. It means we both agree that the road doesn't represent what we have come to imagine when we envision a highway, although by definition, it is still considered a highway.

With that said, the whole point of the roundabouts already present on that road is to rugulate the traffic at the intersections were they are present. I am sure you can agree, as the "so called" highway has smaller feeder roads, feeding directly into the roundabout.

Now at those roundabouts, you would notice that traffic is already slower, much slower than before approaching the roundabout. Pretty much, the lights would act as a more organized form of the roundabouts, with design logic giving preference to the cars on the "so called" highway in terms of how long the light stays green.

So in essence you already have a bad situation, with buses stopping along the "so-called" highway and pedestrians trying to cross. I merely offered a solution I think would fit the present situation, its either that, or more pedestrian bridges are built, or we get rid of the bus stops all together along the "so called" highway, making it a true highway by most standards.

delors: This road shouldnt be an expressway! if there are bus stops, then it not a highway...it is a commercial way; that is why there are bus stops.
No 2, how in heaven will the lights depend on PHCN when we know the capacity and 'efficiency' of PHCN? Street lights that i know off now, are dependent on solar power...and a country like Nigeria where sun (heat) isnt a problem should power street lights using solar power. With the tolls they collect this shouldnt be hard. This is a big scam and absolute disregard of human safety.
If there must be pedestrian bridges, then it must be at every bus stop or at every 250m. More so, speed limit should be set and displayed on the expressway to caution reckless drivers, while pedestrians should be advised to use the pedestrian bridges if available.
When are we gonna learn?

I like the idea of speed limits, but when you think of the enforcers, and lack of technology like speed guns, you start to get discouraged a bit.

If a leader is born out of nairaland some day, I hope they will remember all these posts and implement the big and the little things that would make our society better. The devil as they say, is in the details.

Freeways don't usually have roundabouts and bus stops either. Most freeways have exits to the right which may lead to an overhead bridge that allows you to safely go left. In fact, from my experience, freeways don't have buildings left, right that has access directly to the freeway, at least in Canada and UK where I frequently travel to.

This is not the case on our so called expressway in Nigeria. Sometimes the roads start as a true freeway, but sooner than later, all sorts spring up along the expressway. I still remember when the Ojoo to Toll gate expressway was first built in Ibadan. I drive from my home in Molete to IITA via the express road daily then during my Industrial Training and it was usually smooth, fast and pleasant. Now you watch out for several vehicles stopping haphazardly, some crossing the express anyhow, and numerous pedestrians crossing. As far as I am concerned, I no longer regard that road as an expressway.

I support scrapping the roundabouts for traffic lights. In Canada, I hardly see pedestrian bridges, but you will usually find traffic lights from where you can cross, especially at places where there is high pedestrian traffic.

Also, in Canada highway code, you are required to watch out for pedestrians, even when you have the right of way. But as many people always say in Nigeria, we really don't value human life.

@op I really like your posting. Very clear and logical. Wish more postings on Nairaland will be this objective.

Bro please reread my post i don't think you understood my comment.I never in anyway say a freeway has a roundabout or bus stops. For the buildings at both sides of the road i was referring to Highways that has Pedestrian crossing. And i still repeat it some Highways in America have Pedestrian bridge though they don't come in the way Nigeria's own appear.A good example can be found in Downtown Houston from University of Houston to another building in the other side of the road,Its also found in cities like DC,chicago,Atlanta and Dallas downtown

Fake I.D.:
Am not even based in nigeria but i do visit and very grateful for the information i just read. Generally speaking you have to be careful when crossing the road anywhere in Nigeria. I remember crossing a zebra crossing just outside silverbirds in lagos and nearly being knocked down by an angry driver who i believe don't even know what a zebra crossing is
If you love your dear life, please don't try that again:to nigerian drivers,it's just a tom-tom advertisement

Seems a lot of people posting have never seen the lekki-Epe road and just pull out info from questionable sources.

First, buildings and businesses do not open up directly to the expressway. There are designated entry and exit points. The whole road is fenced off except at those points.

Second.ly, there are speed limits in place. Anyone driving there that has not seen the big round white sign with a red border showing 50 or 40 as the speed limit doesn't know road signs and shouldn't be on the road. People hardly respect the speed limit.

Please, more pedestrian bridges are required as a matter of urgency. While at it, they need fly-overs at the roundabouts to ease traffic. People die everyday on that road just be very careful.

A court in Nigeria has ordered the extradition to the US of a man accused of having links with al-Qaeda and recruiting members to train in Yemen.

Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi , also known as Ayatollah Mustapha, will be extradited within 14 days to stand trial in the US, the court ruled.

Some people damage the barriers that are erected on the median to prevent people from crossing the expressway. Others cross the road right beneath the pedestrian bridge.
Re: High Death Rate On The Lekki Expressway by TonySpike: 6:21am On Aug 29, 2013
Firstly, it is glaring that over 60% of Nigerian drivers cannot interpret road signs. Today, we have drivers who only learn how to 'steer' vehicle but lack respect for road ethics and regulations. For this same reason, many drivers don't even know what a zebra crossing is!!! With issuance of licenses without appropriate driver training, this is what we get.

My take is that more traffic lights should be installed on that road to reduce speed. Also, FRSC/LASTMA should lay siege on that road and lace it with 100 speed traps and stringent enforcement (especially at off-peak hours). I'm sure they will make lots of money by doing this. LASG should also install hidden CCTV units to identify drivers who engage in 'hit and run' accidents. I lost a great friend on that road as far back as 2002...

Earlier this year someone broke part of the barrier beneath the pedestrian bridge at Phase 1 Roundabout. Pedestrians would cross the expressway at that point, rather than use the pedestrian bridge that was directly above them. LCC stationed Man O' War personal beneath the bridge to arrest the jaywalkers.

I remember one occasion where a pedestrian crossed the road, walked through the hole in the wall and was about to cross the second carriageway when commuters at the bus stop started shouting warnings to her not to cross because there were Man O War personnel at the other side waiting to arrest her.

The pedestrian bridges are too far apart for pedestrians to always make use of especially when where one is going is far from the bridge.

Motorists & pedestrians alike should be very careful & government should find a quick solution to this.

Like Hollandis said, Nigeria still has a long way to go. I remember when I visited Dubai, no pedestrian bridges, traffic lights control things. On minor streets without traffic light, once a pedestrian is about crossing, any on-coming vehicle stops. Driving fines is Dubai is so high that one has to be careful and your license might be confiscated and you probably be jailed.

It is a criminal offense to cross an expressway in Lagos. If you are not aware please see the Lagos State penal code or listen to traffic fm.

Pedestrians should value their lives by using the pedestrian bridges. There is no excuse for death. Make use of the bridge and save your life. Don't be a James Bond on an expressway.

I almost knocked down a guy and his girl friend and in the event of avoiding them, I almost had an accident likewise the vehicles behind me. The stupid couple were relaxed holding hands and strolling on Oshodi-Apapa expressway.

We need to promote the use of pedestrian bridges in Lagos especially. It is abused alot. I am sorry for people who get knocked down by vehicles. However, why take the risk to cross an expressway. Even if the bridge is far, please use it and if you don't it means you don't value your life.

cynthrob: Its so sad the level at which people die while crossing the now expanded Lekki Expressway! Just yesterday I was driving along d road only to see a fully grown guy struggling for survival after been knocked down by a car on top speed. There are for things that is so heartbreaking concerning this issue.

Firstly, I don't understand why on earth d street lights do not come on all the time at night, n we pay toll fee every time we pass through the toll gate. I asked a friend who works with LCC and he said it is because they can't run their Generator all the time. The street light is guaranteed when there is light from phcn.
So why are we paying toll fee Sometimes I don't see people crossing the road at night it is when am already very close to them I see.

Secondly, I don't know why we humans take peoples live for granted, when approaching major bus stops like Agungi, Igboefon and so on why don't you slow down when you drive?

Even when they see people crossing the road, they maintain the top speed at which they were driving not caring if they smash the person or not. A lot of people miscalculate how fast a car can move and before you say jack, the car far away before is already close to them.

Then thirdly, I also want to blame the pedestrians, how can you be strolling, making shakara esp guys when crossing such an expressway?
Sometimes just a second separates the guy crossing from the moving car. What if you stumble a bit or miss your step somehow, then you get knocked down.

Most of the accident victims are guys, they are never patient to wait for the road to be clear before jumping in it. A lady can spend up to 10min making sure its safe.

The most painful of all is when this accident occur people leave the victim to struggle and die on his own, instead of calling the toll free LCC emergency number, they gather the victim, taking picture of him and holding their head.

There is a number to call which is toll free (no charge on your phone).

Please when next you see such a scene do call 08002255522. I called themand they responded.

The media should create this awareness and everyone should be alert!!!
they is pedestrian bridge there, why are most people not making use of it? I don't give a fvck if they get hit over by a car,cos they brought the tragedy upon themselves

I persomally cross that road, and even last month I saw a dead body on d other side just after crossing. The bridge is not everywhere it should be, there are only 3 bridges right now on that road, and 7 roundabouts presently and lots of major bustops. I keep asking myself why they would construct just 3 bridges with heavy concret materials(and its poorly designed),rather than use steel costing less and place one on every roundabout and major busstop.

People should learn to speak in one voice and fight for themselves, if people finding it inconvenient to walk from to bridge due to distant, government should make a better convenient bridge in the interest of the people and not tolling money into his own pocket and claiming toll go to private company alone, percentage which suppose to be use to fix the problem is being direct to the sole one person account. We need to get something straight in this country because to my own point view I see no reason why FRSC, LASTMA, RRS, checking point police and so on as they know themselves' I see no reason why they don't mount themselves along that express road at night as they use to do along other express road all around lagos' Nigerian government and its officials can only oppress the poor and put the blame of their incompetent on the poor!!! It clearly shows that the way all this government officials harass some like commercial drivers is quite difference ,' those lekki ajah express road users are they God ? It just not fair at all...

I don't use the road regularly but I go there often. And if I have a brain I would use a bus to get to the next pedestrian bridge then cross i.e. when I am far off the bridge. I see people trekking the road and there is no social harm in trekking. It is even healthy to walk long distance in order to stay fit.

Lagosians enjoy cutting corners. They enjoy beating the system in order to prove to themselves. But that's pure stupidity. When the next vehicle hits you, I hope you would prove to God how smart you are trying to cross an expressway.
