Lagos Mushin turning into drug-infested Favelas in Brazil?

Drug barons fuelling mayhem in Mushin, Lagos - Residents

by Simon Utebor

Some concerned residents of Mushin, Lagos State, say drug barons are responsible for the recurring mayhem in the area.

The residents insisted that until the relevant authorities in the state smashed the syndicate, the hope for lasting peace would be an illusion.

They said it was the drug barons that had been sponsoring hoodlums to unleash mayhem on the people.

The residents spoke against the backdrop of crises in the area resulting in deaths, while many were injured and unspecified number of property was destroyed.

A community leader, who craved anonymity for fear of reprisals, said the problems in Mushin could only be tackled if those drugs barons were arrested.

He said the drug dealers had been sponsoring mayhem in the areas to make the residents lose focus on their illicit activities.

He said, "For long, we have been trying to get rid of the bad boys - drug dealers. They are there in Akala area. They sell their drugs openly.

"The police will come there to raid but after the barons must have settled them, they allow the dealers to continue business as usual. Come to Mushin, you see them displaying drugs openly.

"The last time the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency officials raided the place, the dealers knew beforehand. They usually pay for protection. When you go there, you will see many strange things happening.

"The buildings are mud houses but the cars parked there are exotic ones. The most annoying thing is that the drug peddlers do not live in Mushin, but they come there to sell their drugs and foment troubles."

He said the troublemakers always used their thugs and cultists to fight those they accused of non-cooperation. He regretted that the police were not doing enough to tackle the situation.

An Idi-Oro resident, who identified himself simply as Ola, buttressed the community leader's standpoint, saying the drug barons thrived in crisis.

He also shed light on last Sunday May 19 mayhem and said the two persons - Lanre Pumping and Monsuru 50 Cent – being fingered as the cause of the crisis were innocent residents of the area.

Ola said the crisis started at a naming ceremony at Alhaji Ota Street when rival cults members attacked one another.

He said, "One of the victims was taken to a nurse at Idi-Oro but she refused to attend to him (victim) because there was no police report. The man died thereafter. That was why they gathered from 12.30am to 4.30am on Sunday. Later, they invaded the area, burning cars and burgling houses before the police came around 7am."

"The situation is worrisome. We want the relevant authorities to tackle the recurring problem in Mushin, particularly the drug barons that are fuelling the crisis."

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, urged the authorities to investigate the mayhem with a view to bringing the culprits to book.

He said, "The residents need help. We are fed up with the recurring crises. For many of us, we do not know where to go."

Seems to be the trend now-a-days. Last time I was @ Festac, I saw guys smoking and selling indian hemp without any worry in the world. While growing up in Festac, the only place you could see that kinda thing was public pry schools that are not in session.
