Officials of the Ondo State office of the National Youths Service Corps and management of Goodness of God Comprehensive High School, Akure, Ondo State, have commended a set of corps members who renovated and equipped an abandoned science laboratory in the school.

Our correspondent learnt that the only science laboratory being used by the private school had been abandoned for many years before the 2012/2013 batch 'B' members led by Mr. Uzoh Nnamdi, mobilised funds and put the facility into use, within three months.

Other corps members that revamped the lab include Adesegun Seun, Adegoke Lawrence, Omovudu Wealth, Chidimma Njoku, Onyinye Okekeofojebe, Nnadi Nkechi and Okafor Ogechukwu.

Speaking at the inauguration of the facility at Oke-Aro, Akure premises of the school on Friday, the Head of the Community Development Service of the NYSC in the state, Mrs. Maria Osadebey, described the corps members' initiative as worthy of emulation.

She noted that the corps members realised the importance of laboratory in the teaching of science subjects and took it upon themselves to provide one for the school where they were carrying out their primary assignment.

Osadebey, who was accompanied to the occasion by the Head of Agriculture Department of the NYSC in the state, Mr. Paul Igbanor, expressed confidence that the laboratory would provide pupils with an opportunity to use up-to-date models and implement scientific theories.

She said, "The science laboratory will also improve the overall scientific literacy of the pupils and prepare them well as the next generation of scientists and engineers.

"It will reduce incidence of mass failure in external examinations, create enabling environment for learning and support the efforts of government to provide qualitative education."

Proprietress of the school, Mrs. Yemisi Ewuola, commended the corps members for taking up the challenge of renovating the facility and urged pupils to take the advantage of it to ensure proper usage.

I'd be happy for anyone to show me where SW Corpers serving in the SE have been involved in lasting community service such as this. I often read this about SE Corpers in the SW and especially North.

They know where HOME should be, they feel more at home there most likely! A people that will not judge you based on your language, your looks, your tribe, but who you are and what you present as values will rather be home than a place where you could be an outcast, e.g. OSU! If any of the SE was ever regarded as one or told stories as little kids, imagine the horror they must have lived through all their lives? Even some Ibos who are not from such areas but with a fairer-mind like yours would not wish to be associated with people who designate some fellow human beings as OSU and will sooner prefer not to be associated with them or have another base, just in case! This is reality and for perspective: part of the reason why a Nigerian who has known only abuse from the government and every public system in Nigeria comes to America and finds that he is well accepted! If something growls at his door step, he calls the cops (whom he never knew before, maybe he is not even making enough to pay a dime of taxes yet) and they show-up in few minutes! Almost everything he needs to be human works, he might be discriminated by a few but most people will give him a fair chance to show that he is worth their time, attention and respect! These are things an OSU will never get in Iboland even if he were adorned in GOLD all his life! The Anambras think they are the authentic Ibos and look down on the Imo because they think their woman are loose or cheap and down on Ebonyi because their state is relatively new, not very rich and upcoming! If you are Anambrarian, you cannot understand how Ebonyis or OSU feel when you abuse them and make the butt of your jokes!

Now they go to a SWestern state where no one cares to ask about what tribe he is from, whether he has heard about OSU, if he is Ngwa man who can kill him for food or Mbaise who is more dangerous than a reptilian snake! Can you tell how much relief you feel? Obviously, they must have been treated well because there is no corper or any human being who would invest his life and money where he has been disrespected, abused and discriminated as a non-entity! Kudos to the corpers but even more kudos to a people who can accept you! They can love you just like you are! Some of the Ibo ladies who will not get a marriage proposal in the East because they are victims of the discriminations afore-mentioned are surprised the GUYS from the SW don't give a shaite about all the baggage their fellow Ibos put on them! In Iboland, having money means automatic acceptability, if you are broke, you never count! But they find themselves in a place where how much money they or their parents have does not count even to the peasants but a good character, humility and respect - they will go much, much farther. They can relax and be themselves, they don't need to kill, do rituals, steal, kidnap, etc for money to be accepted or find girls who will befriend them as regular human beings! Look, I could go on but by now, you should see things from a broad, clear perspective and not a narrow one like you are on right now.
