Evil Brain: The problem with euthanasia is that some elderly or sick people may be pressured by relatives to take their own lives when they don't want to. Its not uncommon for very old people to have children who want them gone for their inheritance, or just to avoid the stress of taking care of them. I've actually been approached once by a useless guy who asked me if I could make his aged mother (my patient) pass on faster. Allowing euthanasia would give scumbags like him a legal way to get what he wanted. Old and sick people are the most vulnerable to suggestion, manipulation and pressure. It would be terrible if such people start being made to feel that they are being selfish or inconsiderate to their loved ones just by being alive. I agree with you. another issue is the exact opposite of what you described. for instance the patients would prefer to end their lives but [selfish] loved ones would try to fight the decision and want them to stay "out of love". If a family member of mine was in excruciating pain and wanted to go out quicker no doubt i would be sad and miss them but i'd have to respect their choice. if i were in the position, i'd hope they'd do the same. |

Alfa Seltzer: Both these are not victims. You've sort of been implicitly implying there's something objectively good about being alive, I'm obviously not in that camp. This is a key point of contention. Like all things morality, it's subjective, just as you yourself pointed out and @alfa highlighted. In both these cases, no victims, death is their goal or aim, their desired outcome. Even if you argue that life is (usually) programmed by default to selfishly protect itself, this view point doesn't hold for a variety of reasons (eg, supposed free will or the nature of our consciousness). As for the greater good, that's a collective effort that shouldn't override individual wills for trivial reasons. We both understand that I suppose, so the nature of assisted suicide is being debated. Also, just for reference, note obvious difference between terrorist and assisted suicide. Terrorist is infringing on the rights of others with his actions thereby creating victims, hence the need to stop him. Not so with assisted suicide. Alfa Seltzer: Here is the sort of middle ground we have. I understand your concerns for slippery slopes, they are very valid (and hence we 3rd worlders very obviously disqualify). But in some other regions cases with merit need to be considered. |

Logicboy03: Who wouldn't ? I'd bleach like my life depended on it. All those beautiful indian chicks on TV, very light skinned......................oh, it makes sense now. I don't think I have ever seen a dark skinned lead actor/actress in an Indian film. Unfortunate. |
