…asks court to prevent his removal from office

The crisis in the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, took a different dimension yesterday as the embattled Chairman and Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi vowed not to vacate his seat.

He insisted that the forum’s existence depended on his leadership. The governor also said that he stood for re-election as the NGF chairman just to prove a point that Nigerians are eligible to stand for any elective position.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja after his visit to the NGF Secretariat, the governor also responded to the accusation by Anambra State Governor Peter Obi that he rigged him out in the 2011 NGF election.

Amaechi said: “Governor Obi stepped down for me when it became obvious to him that I had an overwhelming support and that there was no way he could win the position. “The election has come and gone.

Like I said after the election, it was a test for democracy and democracy won at the end of the day. All we can do as democrats that are elected by the people is to uphold democracy and stand by democracy.

“I honestly do not know why the disagreement, I don’t know why. Those of you who have been in meetings will realise that even when we hold meetings, whatever decisions we have taken have always been unanimous and those of you who listen I always say to them ‘I hope that having taken these decisions,’ you will all stand by me and all of them will scream ‘we will all stand by you.’

“I think that it is up to Nigerians to know that nothing pays more than democracy, the right to chose who you want to chose and the governors having made their choice, we can only do one thing but stand by the choice the governors have made.
