I know I wanted United to sign Torres sometime ago, but when Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign him for that huge amount I had to do some searching about Fernando Torres and after my findings, I just have to ask this. . . How Good Is Fernando Torres Anyway? I'm not an avid follower of the Spanish league so my question is a genuine one. He has no Champions League experience. He has never really excelled at a major tournament for Spain. He hasn't even been top scorer in the Spanish league. In fact he has never managed more than 20 league goals in a season. Is this because since he has been at Atletico they have simply been pants? Even his international record isn't great. 40 caps, 14 goals. Compared that to David Villa who has 23 caps and 16 goals. So u mite wonder why Benitez and Ferge were hell bent on signing him . . Well, he's in the EPL now. . .i guess we'll see for ourselves. . |

Eriksson takes over after Thaksin gains control of City Sven-Goran Eriksson has signed a three-year contract worth £9m to become the new Manchester City manager after former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra confirmed he had gained effective control of the club. "I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been asked to be Manchester City's manager," said Eriksson, who had spent the last two days with the players at City's training camp. "This is an exciting challenge and I have already started making preparations for the new season. I want to deliver a team that our fantastic fans can be proud of." The club's chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said of the appointment: "I'm delighted that Sven-Goran Eriksson has agreed to join the club as we move into an exciting new era. Sven's vast experience of managing top clubs to success around Europe is one of the qualities that attracted us to him. He also knows the English Premier League inside out during his time as national team manager." Earlier Thaksin announced to the stock exchange that the club's board and other shareholders had waived any opposition to his taking over the club through his company UK Sports Investments Limited. "UKSIL announces that all conditions relating to the offer have been satisfied or waived," his company said on the stock exchange. "Accordingly, the offer has been declared unconditional in all respects. The offer will remain open for acceptance until further notice." ARSENE WENGER has replaced Thierry Henry with Croatia star Eduardo Da Silva. The Brazilian-born striker, 24, impressed as he scored the first competitive goal at the Emirates Stadium for Dinamo Zagreb last August. And the Gunners have confirmed that Da Silva will join this summer, subject to a medical. An Arsenal statement said: "Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of striker Eduardo Da Silva on a four year contract for an undisclosed fee, subject to a medical." Da Silva moved to Croatia at the age of 15 and took nationality in 2002. He has made 12 appearances for the Croatian national team, scoring seven goals. One of those came in their 2-0 Euro 2008 qualifiying victory over England in October |

Schuster confirmed as new Real coach Real Madrid have named former Getafe boss Bernd Schuster as their new coach. The 47-year-old is Real's eighth manager in four years and replaces Fabio Capello, who was sacked at the end of last month despite leading the club to the La Liga title. "This is a very happy day for me and I would like to thank the club for giving this opportunity to a young coach," said Schuster, a former Real and Germany midfielder. "This is not a new home for me as I played here for two seasons. I'm sure that on my first day as coach it will be like when I was a player and I have the same desire to triumph at the club." President Ramón Calderón said he thought Schuster was the perfect fit for the Bernabéu vacancy. "It seems to me that his teams play good, entertaining football," he said. "He knows the club and knows how to handle a dressing room full of stars." Schuster spent the past two seasons with Getafe and was tied to the club for a further season, but bought himself out of his current contract after Real insisted they would not pay a transfer fee to sign a coach. He guided Getafe to consecutive ninth-placed finishes in La Liga and to a first final of the King's Cup, where they lost to Sevilla. But what impressed the Real hierarchy most was the attacking brand of football his team played, and he will be expected to marry that style with trophies next season. SCHUSTER SETS SIGHTS ON FABREGAS New Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has sent a chill down the spines of all Arsenal fans by insisting Cesc Fabregas is the man to take his side forward. Speaking after being confirmed at the helm at the Bernabeu, the former Germany international immediately identified the Gunners' young midfielder as one of his favourite players. The 20-year-old has regularly been linked with a move back to his homeland, and in particular Real and Barcelona - where he spent time as a youth player before moving to England. He had, however, appeared to commit his future to Arsene Wenger's side this summer in the wake of Thierry Henry's departure for Barca, but Schuster's comments seemingly make an approach by the Spanish champions inevitable. "I like Cesc Fabregas, he plays in the same position as I did in my playing days," said Schuster, who left his role with La Liga rivals Getafe to join Real. "He has improved a lot in England, and learnt a lot from Arsene Wenger, a coach who I admire and who has done over the years a very good job with young players. "I believe he is one of the few players in his position that can carry a team on his back, and when I say teams, I mean quality teams." The prospect of Fabregas following legendary striker Henry out of the Emirates Stadium is a nightmare scenario for the Gunners, although the club are unlikely to be receptive to any Madrid approach. He signed an eight-year contract just last summer and recently insisted: "In 10 days I'll be back training with Arsenal. My team. I'm staying in London." http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_2483579,00.html |

Fulham have won the race to sign Diomansy Kamara from West Brom. The Cottagers have paid £6m for the 26-year-old striker, who has agreed a four-year deal. Kamara asked for a transfer after West Brom's play-off final loss and was also thought to be a West Ham target. Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez said: "His pace will get him in good situations and there's no doubt about the quality of his finishing." Kamara follows Northern Ireland duo Steven Davis and Aaron Hughes to Craven Cottage as part of Sanchez's summer spending spree. The striker had unproductive spells with Portsmouth and West Brom in the top flight, but Sanchez insists he has faith in the Senegal international. "Any player you take up from the Championship is a gamble," he said. "He was at Portsmouth and it didn't work out for him but he has had a couple of great seasons with West Brom and now has a chance to step back up to the Premiership. "Any player that comes to English football finds it a shock to the system, but having had two years of it, it is now a chance to step up and prove himself at this level." Kamara scored 23 goals as the Baggies reached the Championship play-offs last season. He told Fulham's website: "It was a disappointing end to my time at West Brom when we did not gain promotion, but I am certain they will achieve that, hopefully next season. "When the opportunity to sign for Fulham came up, it was just a question of making sure we could agree everything and I'm delighted that is finally done, and I can concentrate on next season, back in the Premiership." West Brom initially rejected Kamara's transfer request but decided to accept a club-record offer for Kamara, as well as Wigan's £5.3m bid for Jason Koumas. "We have said all along we will only consider selling players like Diomansy and Jason if we receive head-turning offers and that the deals are in the club's best interests," he told the West Brom website. "We feel these offers mirror those criteria." BBC Sport

Liverpool have made a £10m bid for highly-rated Ajax winger Ryan Babel, BBC Five Live Sport understands. However, the Dutch club are thought to be holding out for £13.5m for the 20-year-old, who has also been linked to Arsenal. Babel's agent told Sportweek magazine: "Liverpool have made a bid for Ryan but he hasn't spoken with them. "We can only speak when Ajax say the clubs have an agreement, and phase two can start, but it's not that far yet." But Five Live football correspondent Jonathan Legard has been told a deal could go through on Wednesday. He said: "Liverpool have bid 15m euros (£10m), Ajax want 20 million euros (£13.5m) so there's a gap of about £3.5m. "He was strongly linked to Arsenal but Liverpool have made their move and it seems they will use the money from Craig Bellamy's move to West Ham to bring in one of Europe's finest young talents." Babel impressed as part of the Holland Under-21 team that won the recent European Championship. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez signed striker Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid last week and admitted he was looking to sign wide players to help supply his new acquisition. Babel made 27 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax last season, scoring five goals. BBC Sport

Wigan Athletic will hold talks with Jason Koumas after West Bromwich Albion accepted an offer for the Wales international. Koumas has been targeted by several Premier League clubs after West Brom failed to clinch a return to the top flight. Fulham have had an offer rejected, while Aston Villa have denied reports of a swap deal for Koumas involving Gary Cahill and Isaiah Osbourne. Latics boss Chris Hutchings saw a £4million bid for Koumas turned down last month, but has now increased his offer to £5.3million. West Brom have accepted the bid, with chairman Jeremy Peace confirming it has met with the club's valuation of the player. "We have said all along we will only consider selling players like Jason if we receive head-turning offers and that the deals are in the club's best interests," Peace told the club's official website. "We feel these offers mirror those criteria." Diomansy Kamara has already left the Hawthorns on Monday after finalising a £6million transfer to Fulham. Koumas could be the next to go, while centre-half Curtis Davies has also asked to leave Tony Mowbray's men. Sky Sports

Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting Manchester United to complete the signing of Carlos Tevez in the coming days. The Argentine has agreed personal terms to join the Premier League champions, who are trying to resolve the issue of his registration with West Ham United and the Premier League. Tevez's representative Kia Joorabchian is also involved in the negotiation process, but Ferguson believes the matter will conclude with the striker moving to Old Trafford. "We have had a negotiation, it's well documented, with Carlos Tevez," said Ferguson at a press conference on Sky Sports News. "The essential parts, it's all agreed, we're just hoping to finalise it soon. "I thought it was going to be done by last weekend. Everything seemed perfectly okay, so the hold-up must be with the Premier League." Ferguson also anticipates none of the problems which blighted West Ham's signing of Tevez, with the East London club fined £5.5million. The United manager insists nothing 'dodgy' will occur in his club's quest to bring the South American to the club. He added: "I don't know about the intricacies, I've left that to Maurice Watkins, he's dealing with that. "I'm sure the outcome will be that we will be taking him with complete clarity in the deal, with no suspicions or anything dodgy about it. "There is no way we can be involved in anything that's underhand at all." Tevez's capture would complete a big-spending summer for Ferguson, who has already secured deals for Anderson, Owen Hargreaves and Nani. Sky Sports

Bakari Sagna will complete his move from Auxerre to Arsenal on Tuesday, according to widespread reports emanating from France. The talented full-back, who prefers to operate on the right but can also play on the left, is thought to have undergone a medical at Emirates Stadium. A five-year year deal is purported to have been agreed, after the two clubs concurred on a fee in the region of £6million. Sagna arrives with a growing reputation in his homeland, having been drafted into Raymond Domenech's France squad, although he has yet to win his first cap. A whole host of Europe's biggest clubs were thought to be monitoring Sagna's situation, but it is Arsenal who have stolen a march on their rivals to secure his services. Sky Sports

Manchester City are set to land Reggina striker Rolando Bianchi in a €13million(£8.7million) deal, according to reports in Italy. City have jumped to the front of the queue to land the 24-year-old, who was the fourth top-scorer in Serie A last season. Newly promoted giants Napoli and Juventus were both keen on keeping Bianchi in Italy, whilst Arsenal and Porstmouth were also strongly linked - but it seems City are firm favourites to clinch his signature. Reggina president Lillo Foti has confirmed that Bianchi was set to be sold to a foreign club. "The operation should be done in the next few hours," said Foti. "Will he go abroad? There is a good possibility. "The boy would like to remain in Italy, to have the chance with the national team - but there are important offers and he has the ability and characteristics to assert himself, without being here. "Juventus and Napoli both said they would satisfy our demands - that was in excess of €10million - but the two clubs have done nothing." With a move looking likely, Bianchi has stressed that he would have few problems with plying his trade away from Italy. "I could go to a foreign club," Bianchi told Rai Sport. "I have never discarded any opportunity, from an Italian point of view to stay in Italy does appeal - but that is difficult. "Then there is the consideration of the other offers which are foreign." Meanwhile, Reggina have completed the signing of Hungarian starlet Csaba Preklet from Gyori, The 16-year-old, who had a trial with Reading last year, has penned a three-year deal. Sky Sports
