The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, in Abuja passed a vote of confidence in President Goodluck Jonathan.

The confidence motion, which was moved by a former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, was unanimously adopted by members of the committee.

The motion was seconded by the State Chairman of PDP in Delta State, Peter Onyelukachukwu

The party said that it was evident that Nigeria had made significant progress in many sectors under Jonathan’s leadership.

“I stand here to move the motion for the vote of confidence in the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“It is important to recall that on the 29th of May 2011, when the President took over the reins of power as the democratically-elected President, he declared that he will never let Nigerians down. I am happy to say that he has kept to his promise. On the 29th of May 2013, two years after, the President presented his mid-term report to Nigerians.

“This was the first time in the history of Nigeria that this kind of democratic adventure was embarked upon by any president. Having gone through the report, it is clear that this administration led by Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who was sponsored and elected under the banner of PDP, has achieved a lot in all sectors.

“It is important to note and to state a few of his achievements: railways, the hitherto comatose railway lines that were not working for decades are now operational. Trains now move from Lagos to Kano and I was privileged to be one of the passengers; two weeks ago, I experienced the ride,’’ he said.

Mantu, in the motion, also commended President Jonathan’s “resolute and decisive tackling” of Nigeria’s security challenges.

He said the administration had curbed terrorism and insurgency in the country, particularly, in the North-East geo-political zone.

Mantu also applauded the on-going reforms and development in the country, especially those in the agriculture, aviation, transportation and education sectors.

He said that it was apparent that President Jonathan’s agenda for national transformation was being diligently implemented and that Nigerians were better for it.

Mantu commended the President’s strict adherence to the rule of law as well as his protection and defence of the constitution.

“The President is discharging his mandate to the appreciation of Nigerians that overwhelmingly voted for him in the 2011 general elections.” It was for this reason and more that the former Deputy Senate President thought it necessary to call for a vote of confidence in the Nigerian Head of State.
