FG Awards Lagos-ibadan Expressway Contract To Berger, RCC by awodman: 2:34pm On Jun 25, 2013
Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, said on Monday that the Federal Government had awarded the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Messrs Julius Berger and RCC Construction firms.

He said the Lagos-Sagamu portion of the road was awarded to Julius Berger, while the Sagamu-Ibadan was awarded to RCC.

According to him, the Lagos to the Sagamu interchange end of the road will be expanded to three lanes on either side, while the portion from the interchange to Ibadan will have the existing two lanes reconstructed.

Onolememen stated this while inspecting the Benin-Sagamu Expressway in company with top ministry officials and journalists.

The minister did not give the cost of reconstructing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and other details like the duration of the project.

He noted that there were 30,000 kilometers of roads across the country but that the Ministry of Works lacked enough funds to execute the reconstruction of the failed portions.

The minister however assured Nigerians that the ongoing reconstruction of the Benin-Ore end of the expressway would be completed and inaugurated before the end of the year while work would start immediately on the Ore-Sagamu end of the road.

He explained that both Julius Berger and RCC had mobilised men and materials to site and that they had both pledged to start construction works immediately.

The minister said the Benin – Ore contract was awarded in October last year and that the contractors had made appreciable progress.

He said, "The project is put at about 20 percent completed which is very impressive considering the fact that they only had just four months of dry season to work.

"This is not a friendly weather for road construction work; we hope that with the coming of the next dry season, the contractors would be able to accelerate the completion of the road.

"We want to the Benin to Ore this year so that Nigerians can see what we have done. Many people thought it won't happen but it is a reality.

"Our goal is to achieve a brand new road from Sagamu to Benin and now with the award of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway, by the time the project is completed, we will marry the two together which is hundreds of kilometres of roads in an unbroken chain.

"This will make travelling from one point of the country to another very pleasurable."

On the report of the House of Representatives Committee on Works which indicted some contractors for allegedly executing shoddy jobs, the minister said, "We have standards and most of the roads the committee complained about are old projects and since we came on board, we set up a full department for material detecting and quality control and we have been able to discover quite a number of shoddy jobs for which we are no longer paying."

Reconstructing the road is a good development but continuing a 2 lane road from Sagamu to Ibadan after 14 years of waiting and 7 years before vision 2020 speaks of lack of vision.
