Good day fellow Nigerians. One thing as nigerians we tend to hold strongly to is our cultural heritage. This is due to our inquisitive young generation towards matters concerning their root, and the tenacious hold of the older generation to our values and customs.
Over the years inter tribal marriages which was once seen as a taboo became acceptable with time after the civil war to foster peace, unity and harmony between different tribes. Interesting as it might sound inter tribal marriages has with time had an adverse effect on the preservation of our cultural heritage. A recent study showes that 1 out of 10 children born out of inter- tribal marriages can speak at least one of the languages and a staggering amount of nine can not speak either at all. Most of rhem claiming they can hear but cannot speak. Also it has been noted that in so called urbanized areas of nigeria, the youths are hardly interested in culture. They barely know the teachings and practices of their people. Children born out of inter tribal marriages always give the excuse that they cannot speak because nobody taught them while growing up. True as this might sound it should also be noted that these children on their part failed to put more effort in trying to at least learn the practices of their people from books.
Though in some inter tribal marriages you find children who can speak both languages, this is rather scarce these days. The result of menace in our society can be attributed to LOVE. People fall in love without taking into cognizance the effect on their actions. If love is everything why don't sickle cell patients marry themselves these days, or HIV positive marry a negative.
In conclusion a rhetorical question is been asked here should we sacrifice our cultural heritage on the alter of LOVE......you be the
Judge and your comments the verdict.
