Jose Mourinho has returned to Chelsea, who are in hot pursuit of a proven goalscorer - but the answer to their problems could well be lying in their own ranks.

Despite Fernando Torres’ £50m move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool proving to be less than profitable thus far, there have been encouraging signs that the feared maestro of old could be on the brink of a return.

Having scored in the Europa League final against Benfica in May to help Chelsea lift the trophy, he rounded off his club season with 22 goals.

Despite this tally being not exactly formidable, having played 64 games in the process, it is over the converted bench mark of 20 goals in a season for a top striker.
During this month’s Confederations Cup in Brazil, he has added a further five goals to his season total, grabbing four of those against minnows Tahiti, who were thrashed 10-0.
The Spanish marksman is their second highest all-time top goalscorer behind only David Villa, and finished this season as Chelsea’s highest goalscorer. The signs are beginning to turn in the Spaniard’s favour.
Torres signed from Liverpool in January 2011 for a record British transfer fee of £50m following a streak of 65 goals in 102 games for the Merseyside club from 2007.
Since then his form has been shaky at best, missing an open goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford and scoring just 15 in his opening two seasons in London.
Under his former manager at Liverpool, Rafael Benitez, he begun to find his feet again where he amassed his total this season.
Since the arrival of Mourinho, however, there has been much speculation about Torres’ long-term future at Chelsea.

Within the last few weeks, Mourinho is believed to be keen to keep Torres and willing to offload strike partner Demba Ba instead.

This can only come as good news for ‘El Nino’ as he looks to rebuild his feared reputation amongst supporters around the world.
Under Mourinho, he has the best man possible to help him do just that.

Whether Torres will step up to the plate, only time will tell, but one thing is certain: he will certainly be one to watch next season, especially with his splendid display at the ongoing FIFA Confederation Cup Brazil 2013.
