Hi folks,

I came home from a 10 day trip 2 days ago, only to observe that my 3 year old daughter is seriously trying to stammer. She drags on every word she wants to utter. I'm not comfortable with this, as nobody in the house stutters. Is there anything we could do to nip this in the bud at this early stage, thank you.

it could be due to fear or hyper excitment,i was a serious stammerer during my chilhood days,what my mother did was to ENCOURAGE ME WITH LOVE AND PATIENCE TO SPEAK VERY SLOWLY.sometimes it stems out of inferiority complex,u have to really encourage her dont insult her that will worsen the case .u need to let her build confidence in herself that whether she speaks slowly or fast ,she is still ur daughter and that u love her very much

Also speak to your paediatrician for helpful hints and tips on how you can help your daughter overcome this phase in her life...

yes sometimes it does.notice that the op said she just started.she is feeling insecure if the op takes time to really show her love and tells her that he will never scold her no matter how longs it takes to complete a sentence but thay she should speak slowly and pick her words ,she will change

try talking to her to find out and if it is not fear then try to caution her to speak more slowly.pls dont shout on her ,pls i am begging u ,if u do she withdraw into herself

i am not a psycologist ooo but just using my own life experience to offer advice .when a child stammers and u shout him or her down,or beat the child .the child will lose self confidence because he will believe that the parent reaction is the same way every other person will react.the child will become more cautous and most of the time will start talking to himself because that is the only person he can trust.it is a complex case but the bottom line is correct the child with love and patience

Kids can easily pick stuttering from school,i know how many annoying habits my toddlers have picked and dropped so far.
