MamiWata: Fulaman198: Please don't tell me that you have bought the crap being paraded around cyber space as to how Maasais should typically look like. Lol..!! Those girls are 100% Maasai. Both parents are Maasai. They are the Moipei sisters - Martha Siteiya Moipei, Magdaline Nemanyara Moipei, Mary Nenkai Moipei (who happen to be triplets) and their younger sister Seraphine Moipei. They are singers with their own musical group, the Moipei Quartet. Google Moipei Quartet or Moipei triplets to learn more about them.

That is Maasai attire. It doesn't come in one design like you've all been made to believe. Lol.. These girls' attires are 100% Maasai. @ Fulaman, yes, traditionally Maasai women had their hair short. So did Kikuyus, Samburus, and Kalenjins. That doesn't however mean that you won't find women from these groups with their hair braided or permed. This woman below - Debra Sanaipei has braided her hair but she's no less of a Maasai than those who keep their hair short. In fact, she's a pure Maasai woman - 100% Maasai. Papa and Mama both Maasai.

Traditionally, Maasai men kept their hair long, but you won't argue that the man below isn't a Maasai on the grounds that he's got a suit on, rather than his traditional attire.

Bukut initiates, Senegal The bukut is the rite of initiation in diola people of southern Sénégal in Casamance .it is the transition from adolescence to adult.Generally it is once à génération according to Wikipedia...There is evidence that this ritual has existed at least since the 12th century. Before the colonization, boukout was the only method of formal education in the area, preparing young men to take their place in society as well as teaching them how to defend it.Organized by the elders who hold power over the other villagers and control all means of production, the ceremony provides initiates with political, economic, and religious independence. Until they have partaken in boukout, young people may not marry or receive land, and are somewhat excluded from the community. The uninitiated are not considered men, as boukout is seen to bestow masculinity. 1 Like |
