Fashola Commissions Maternal Centres, Approves Construction Of Another Two by Aderostock(m): 5:38am On Jun 30, 2013 |
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has approved the construction two more Maternal and Child Care Centres (MCCs) to be located in Badagry and Epe local government areas of the state thus bringing the numbers of such Centers in the state to ten. Fashola who stated this at the commissioning of the Maternal and Child Health Centre at Ajeromi General Hospital explained that the MCCs have been specially designed in order to respond to issues relating maternal and child health in the state’s growing populace inclusive of referrals from primary health clinics by providing quality services for the restoration, improvement and promotion of the health and well being of women, babies and children in their catchment areas focusing essentially on obstetrics, gynaecology and family planning. He explained that the construction and equipping of the MCCs are being undertaken in phase adding that MCC at Ajeromi General Hospital brings to four the number of MCCs that have so far been completed. Said he, "the maternal and child care centres is a 100-bed specially designed hospital for women and children. It’s a decisive response to the problem of transportation and distance in a way to compound the indices of maternal and child mortality in the state. The first of this type of facility was delivered in Ikorodu, the second one was delivered in Isolo and the third ones in Ifako-Ijaiye, and this is the fourth". Fashola noted that prior to the provision of these facilities, women in labour who required special attention and caesarean section have to travel from Ikorodu, Isolo and Ifako-Ijaiye all heading in one direction; the Ayinke House in Ikeja stressing that sometimes during these travels, complication in labour occurs and death happens which could be of the child, the mother or sometimes both of them. "Since we started building these centres, the story have changed, the incidence of death has reduced and this is because the facilities in Ikorodu, Isolo and Ifako Ijaiye are serving their purpose, for us this is tax payer’s money very well spent. Also, the Ayinke House; the flagship is now undergoing a major rehabilitation" , the Governor stated. He pointed out that the MCCs in Ikorodu, Isolo and Ifako-Ijaiye in their first 21 months of operations, recorded 89,255 antenatal clinic attendances, 15,091 gynaecologic clinic attendances and 121,549 pediatric clinic attendances out of which 5,335 children representing 4.4% required hospitalization. "The Ajeromi Maternal and Child Centre was completed and handed over in July 2011. Operations commenced on the 25th July 2011 and as at November 27, 2011 the records reflect antenatal clinic attendance of 2116, gynaecology clinic attendance of 783 and pediatric clinic attendance of 4,423 out of which 254 pediatric clientele required hospitalization. This facility has since performed 254 deliveries inclusive of 94 caesarean sections and 31 gynecological surgeries", Fashola noted. He opined that the maternal and child care centres will complement other maternal and child strategy in the state to provide expected succor to mothers and children stressing that the construction is a underscores not only government’s capacity to reduce infant and maternal mortality but it also brought to the fore government’s imagination and determination to deliver strong healthcare for children and mothers. Earlier the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris stated that the concept of the maternal and child health centres was mooted with the conviction that intervention provided at the centre would impact positively on the health indices of mothers and children. He opined that the completion of the maternal and child health centre at Ajeromi General Hospital will provide additional referral facilities for functional primary health clinics in the Ajeromi Ifelodun local government area of the state.

What is the work of Local Governments and Development Authorities/Municipalities ? Have Governors banned Commissioners from flagging off projects and commissioning them on completion as was obtainable in Second Republic? It seems the State Governors have sidetracked the usual convention for self glory. |
