We Don’t Need Your Oil – Obama Tells Nigeria by blaise26abj(m): 8:38am On Jul 02, 2013
The President of United States of America, Barack Obama categorically told Nigeria and other African countries that have oil deposits that his country do not need the oil and energy as they are capable of generating their source of energy. The American number one citizen who created lots of rucus when he visited Africa last week and refused to visit Nigeria, confirmed the fears in some quarters that the days of crude oil importation from African oil producing countries, including Nigeria, were numbered, as oil export from Nigeria is on a downward trend.

Speaking at a press conference with South African President, Jacob Zuma, during his visit to that country as part of his three-nation African visit, Obama said his country does not need energy from Africa. “Well, the truth is, the United States, at this point, on issues of energy, for example, frankly, we don’t need energy from Africa. Because of advances that have been made, we’re seeing oil production and natural gas production, as well as clean energy production all growing at a rapid rate in the United States,” he said.

“So our primary interest when it comes to working with Africa on energy issues has to do with how do we power Africa so that it can be an effective market creating jobs and opportunity in Africa, but then, we also then have somebody to trade with and sell iPods to, and airplanes, and all kinds of good stuff,” he added.

Ghana and Uganda are the African countries that have been attracting the most attention in the Crude oil Industry. Ghana is thought to have oil reserves of 1.8 billion barrels as well as significant gas deposits. Ethiopia and Sierra Leone are other countries to have discovered crude oil in recent years. And add kenya to that list.

It's past the time for Nigeria to diversify our economy. Better late than never.

The problem is that China that we are now depending on to buy our oil is milking us dry. Taking our natural resources, illegal immigrants in the name of expatriates and very little indigenous technical workers and silly manuals written in chinese.

God help us rescue ourselves from ourselves

America intends to do the same. They realise that China made $200billion last year from Africa and they want a piece of the action. Africa must look inwards to develop itself. It must invest heavily on education and create the next revolutionary product.

Foreign investment is good, it employs people. However, capital flight will occur regularly.

Until what happened in Ghana by the then president (is it Rawlings now?)...happens in nigeria, we would never leave this state of stagnancy we are in... We have the potential to be one of the most desirable countries in Africa and the world, but look at us. Its a shame.

If you go to Ghana everybody loves Rawlings...boy, girl, man, and woman..they all love him...because he dragged Ghana into the 20century kicking and screaming....now Ghana is the most stable country in West Africa..

It is those counties (Ghana an Uganda) who have just now discovered oil, that should be more worried. They feel that they have hit the big time, at a time when in reality it will be the opposite. I dont think they realize it to be honest.

Who will they sell to? If demand is actually in decline from traditional buyers like the USA?

That can no longer happen in 2013, without it causing an international outrage.

The time of lining up politicians and killing them, without the due process of the law is OVER. It will just be seen (and rightly so) as barbaric and a backward step for any country, including Nigeria.

Crude/gas can also be used internally to increase production. The truth is crude oil is a major commodity and they will find buyers even if USA completely stops buying. The prices might crash but it doesn't mean they won't keep making money.

Our problem is that when it crashes, our economy which is being run with oil money will suffer terribly.

As a major producer....of a major commodity.....Nigeria will still sell oil. It can also be used as you say to increase production.

Nigeria has realized we need to diversify and we are doing so.
These countries feel they are in line for a Nigeria or Angolan type oil boom. I don't think they have realized that this may not happen as they expect.

They feel they will use oil money to solve all problems and become industrialized.

The title of the thread is incorrect (purposely)...Obama was not talking specifically to Nigeria, but Africa as a continent.
