By Taiye Odewale, Abuja Senate yesterday was in commotion during debate on whether to override President Goodluck Jonathan who has refused to sign the State of the Nation Address Bill recently passed by the National Assembly. This was even as Senator Garba Marafa (ANPP, Zamfara), went aggressive on Paulinus Igwe (PDP, Ebonyi) just while the Senate leadership was lobbying the aggrieved lawmakers to accept that debate on the Bill be suspended till further notice to allow frayed nerves calm down. But for the intervention of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who cited Order 70(1), subsection A of the standing rule of the Senate, to move for adjournment, Jonathan would have been vetoed as majority of the lawmakers argued that constitutionally, he has no power to propose amendment on a bill already passed by the National Assembly.To read more click here:http://www.mydailynewswatchng.com/2013/07/04/commotion-in-senate-as-jonathan-escapes-veto/ |
