If you have used mineral oil for over a year it's very likely sludge has built within your engine and returning to synthetic will clear out the which will make the engine smokey, and surfaces previously occupied by sludge will allow more flow which tends to cause leak as the mating parts would have adjusted to the sludge. So just remain on the mineral oil and ensure regular maintenance interval.

So where does Synthetic blend come in? If I can't switch after a while, why have a product that combines both mineral and synthetic?
