Scam/kidnap Alert!!! by RoyalRoy(m): 9:19pm On Jul 13, 2013
Forum members, I just got informed that a friend got kidnapped in Yaba area of Lagos after he was lured to come & check a car out!!!!

He had contacted a dealer(not on nairaland), who didn't put an address on his post on checki.com , to come buy a Tokunbo 2011 corolla at a sum of 1.8m naira!!!

He hasn't returned since ystday, all his lines were switched off!!!

Just this evening he was forced to call home to get his cheque book to be deposited at a particular location tomorrow!!

Please be careful of adverts here with no traceable address, and don't ever go alone!!!! Better still call the dealer to meet you at a public place nearest to his location!!!

Wise up brothers!!!

Come on! why fall for such crap? A 2011 Toyota corolla can hardly be sold that cheap. Our greed and curiosity shouldn't get the better part of us.

This is scary!
We should be really alert and wise. The times are evil. This is the kind of thread that should make front page for wider awareness

Definitely he fell for it & is gonna pay dearly for it.
I for one know the average price of most cars
, but what happens to novices like my friend? He definitely thaught it was a good bargain!!!

Am already seeing the trend here on nairaland already!!!!
Buyers, pls beware!!!
Re: Scam/kidnap Alert!!! by RoyalRoy(m): 10:17pm On Jul 13, 2013
@Gboliwe, I already saw some threads in the auto section with crazy prices with no location or formal address!!!

Just phone numbers!!!

Some people who do not know the average prices of cars will innocently fall into this trap!!!

I pray he returns unharmed!!!
So sad & disturbing!!!

Thank you for alerting us about the kidnap scam. Car buyers should take extra-precaution such as not going alone to meet car sellers for vehicle inspection. Another measure of precaution is being discreet about their itinerary with car sellers on the day of inspection

Wow. We have some potentials on here with their riduculous prices.

I have seen a toks '11 corolla advertised for 1.8m on here. Maybe its d same kidnappers sef.

Wow. They should get the police involved, the might be able to trace where d calls r coming from.

Sorry, I gotta be blunt . Its a pity he fell for the scam and I pray he comes back safe and sound . But for crying out loud any prospective car buyer should ask around and get sound information on car prices . Gone are the days of novices . This is a forum . Compare prices with odas dat are posted . It can't be too good to be true . He wanted a cheap-cheap .
Better still when you see an advert from a dealer , click on his profile and check out his previous posts. It gives u better info on his kinda dealings.
I hope he makes it back.

Reality....most people who are not on nairaland might not be well aware of average "acceptable" price range of cars....even those who are on nairaland but don't visit the auto section might still fall prey!!!

I beg to differ. A 2011 corolla that needs repairs can go for that rate. it is not about him going for a cheap car, evil meaning guys will go to any length to get what they want. I can put a traceable address of someone not related to me in an advert does it make it legit? What about those innocently kidnapped in taxi, in buses or even those that were sleeping in their houses when armed robber entered? Abeg, stop talking about how the OPs friend was wrong and start praying for his safety. na naija we dey, bad things happen everyday..

Someone even called the victim greedy.. is he the greedy one or the thieves?

You shouldn't put blames on the OPs friend.. How are you even sure it was the auto dealers that kidnapped him.

The solution is just to pray for his safe return. God bless.

You are very correct sir, it could happen to anyone!!
Its actually people who knew he had that amount of money at hand that engineered it. Might be coincidental that it was when he went to check a car out!!!
All in all we pray for his safety & hope the police don't bungle this one!!!

May God help us all.

Re: Scam/kidnap Alert!!! by richt75: 6:34pm On Jul 14, 2013
that is a tokumbo car for christ sake!!! let no blames on him. a dealer or someone can dispose or sell his item cheaper price in other to solve one problem of the other. prayers is the key to all and let all the blames go to the criminals.

This is another dimension to kidnapping business. Car buyers should be wary of such scams. If not listed on Nairaland and not a registered car dealer on NL please run for your dear life.

FP please.
