We have learned from reliable sources that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed MTN to halt with immediate effect all it’s plans with the 10 kobo per second rates. According to the source, about 8 million of it’s subscribers on the affected plans (MTN iPulse and MTN SuperSaver plus) would be automatically migrated to other plans starting from midnight, 14th of July, 2013 to avoid NCC sanctions.

No clear reason has been put forward for the NCC directive, but my guess is that it has to do with NCC’s designation of both MTN and Globacom Nigeria as “dominant” players and as a result would be closely monitored to ensure that they were not using “anti-competitive practices” to stifle the competition. If that’s the case, It would be funny as that very reason gave birth to the new plans being scrapped today.

We have reached out to a few contacts and we’ll update if we hear something new on the issue. So if you wake up tomorrow on a new plan, well we gave you a few hours heads up.

If you do have scoops like this for us, please send to tips@techsuplex.com. Thanks.

Anti-competitive practices indeed!
Glo mobile is also a dominant player. Is the company also alleged to be guilty of similar practice?
The GSM business is not restricted to just voice calls. MTN can't be said to also have the best rate on data charges, so why should they be sanctioned for lowering their voice call rates?

I thought network providers paid interconnectivity charges for calls going to other networks (or is it the other way round?). I don't think the telecom provider should be harassed for lowering their rates.

NCC is taking it too far o.

I think it is true ooo. I just checked my account balance now and what MTN wrote was "your account balance is....." instead of the usual "your super saver olus account balance is....." . Too bad one coming from a body that is supposed to protect subscribers' interests! I sense conspiracy here

NCC is rather too harsh on MTN with their recent policies; i hope it's not to protect the interest of a certain elements of other telecom providers because I see no reason why reduction of call rates should in anyway be sanctioned instead of otherwise or do they intend frustrating MTN out of the industry?

Ncc should be scrapped, if this is their sole reason to drive competition...seems like they lack competent thinkers.

Below MTN official memo to staff. Lols

We recently launched MTN iPulse and Supersaver Plus propositions, offering customers a flat rate of 10k/second to call any network in Nigeria.

However, we have been directed by the regulators to suspend these packages pending consultations. We hereby temporarily suspend these plans with effect from Midnight of 14th July 2013 while we further engage the NCC.

However, this change would affect a lot of customers who are currently on these two plans and may lead a deluge of calls to the Call Centre or Walk In Centers.

Please placate customers, letting them know that this change is as a result of a directive issued to MTN by the NCC, compelling MTN to temporarily suspend their current tariff. However, customers can still enjoy the benefits highlighted below:

15k/sec to ALL networks
40k/sec for the 1st minute of the day
Free N300 to call 1 special number on recharge of N200 and above. Valid for 7days (M2U)
Free 10MB weekly data bonus on recharge of N100

Do endeavor to suggest the MTN WOW Offer; offering customers 100% bonus upon recharge within the hours of 12.30am and 11.59pmdaily.
MTN Wow All day is therefore best way to recharge using the special recharge code *885*12 digit PIN#.

To support this, we would be sending a series of SMS to customers over the coming week with massive media exposure on Radio ( English & Local languages), TV and Press. We hope this bonus would compensate for the change in their rates and drive perception of value in the minds of our customers.

As much as I sympathize with your points of view, I think you should really consider what anti-competition is.

You think you are getting a good deal but it's very shortsighted. By making it impossible for others to compete, you are being locked in, the industry is not growing, and you are ultimately worse off.

example you have to endure mtn excesses, those times they deduct your credit with out refund, the terrible network issues etc. All because they sucked u in with 10kobo carrot.

Ultimately you lose. Esp because with a guaranteed majority of suckers the motivation to improve services is low, profits are high.

Its not just a case of ncc not wanting you to have low tariffs. There are conditions before a telco should do stuff like this. I can guarantee mtn does not meet those conditions.

FUnny tho nobody complained wen all telcos were banned from promo but now this. Mtn staff on nl sha.... enough washing.

fix ur issues. Just a few days ago they were deducting thousands of naira from accts in d name of stopping free browsing. Unaccounted for money. Till date u still cannot opt out of any plan or.platform on mtn. U cannot even.cancel your BIS whilst other networks allow u to do that. Yet we suckers flock.to mtn because of underhand freebies.

n is pretty much like d devil. U.dine.with a long spoon. And u cannot.get anything.from them. Every benefit has large hooks to kill u.
Oh please

I would have preferred a reduction in data charges..more like 10kb per mb. Click like if you'll prefer this..

If possible, they should force them to drop the calls to one kobo per second. Its makes everything better.

What can i say?
Talking about mtn zone, before calling, you will see 8k or 4k per seconds, while making call..... Brother u will be suprised by what you will see, either 40k/s or 48k/s ..hmmmm, wetin increase ham? sad

talking about pulse, brotherly speaking, i like the 10mb, but its just too small, and you can only call people making use of same plan for 8k/s, brother to tell you the truth, i always beg my friends to migrate to pusle, so we can talk smoothly... But they don't know the reason behind it wink

mtn smooth talk...... I can only call just one person with the bonus sad what if the person's number ain't going within the 7days, money don burn sad

Re: NCC Directs MTN To Scrap 10 Kobo Per Second Plans Effective Midnight by chei: 2:22pm On Jul 14, 2013
This is nonsense. The NCC has no right to tell MTN what to charge their customers. If MTN wants to charge 1k per second then they should be free to do so, if any other telecom company can't stand the heat, they can pack up and leave.
The role of the NCC is to regulate quality and maintain a level playing field for the companies not to dictate pricing methods.
They should go to hell!

Instead of protecting customers interests, they are rather punishing customers thinking it is MTN they are regulating.
