US City, Detroit, Is Bankrupt! by Nobody: 12:03am On Jul 19, 2013 |
Once the very symbol of American industrial might, Detroit became the biggest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy Thursday, its finances ravaged and its neighborhoods hollowed out by a long, slow decline in population and auto manufacturing.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/18/detroit-bankruptcy-keyn-orr-federal-chapter-9_n_3619099.html |

Detroit's budget deficit is believed to be more than $380 million. Orr has said long-term debt was more than $14 billion and could be between $17 billion and $20 billion. |

CFCfan:I need to readup on the history of the crisis and what informed them to leave. is it that Detroit was not giving them the enabling environment? I really fear for that city cos the crime rate will rise up. The only thing that has been giving Detroit a good name is the automobile industry. |

Afam4eva: So, where are those automobile companies? I know Detroit has been stressed for some years now. The Detroit three still there but what will they do? GM and Chrysler group reduced manufacturing by more than 50% after they restructured under the FG bailout. The city of Detroit has been financially stressed beyond limit and it's no doubt the bubble gave in. For there to be an economy - county, city, state or FG - there must be an enabling fiscal environment which includes infrastructures, security, financial resources, etc. Detroit was lagging in so many areas, crimes were on the HIGH, there was infrastructural deficit, the city was spending more than it earned because there weren't too much businesses paying taxes due to several reasons. It was only a matter of time before the reverse effect begin so I'm not surprised at this. Nonetheless, they can pull themselves out of this mess, restructure their debts and liabilities and start ALL OVER again. 1 Like |
