No fewer than 70 beggars and the homeless were on Wednesday dumped at the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.

Agents of the Lagos State Government reportedly brought the destitute to Onitsha.

The destitute told journalists that they were dumped about 3am at Upper Iweka after being detained in Ikorodu, Lagos, for over six months for alleged wandering and other minor offences by the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline officials.

The destitute said they were brought to Onitsha in four buses, escorted by riot policemen.

One of them, Mr. Osondu Mbuto, from Ohaozara in Ebonyi State and a petty trader in Lagos, said he was arrested by the Lagos State Government officials while going to his shop on December 18, 2012.

Mbuto added that the Lagos State Government officials were in company with some policemen.

The Chairman of Nigeria Red Cross Society in the South-East, Dr. Peter Katchy, described the action of the Lagos State officials as condemnable.

He said, "It's very deplorable; it's very disheartening that a state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria will bundle people, who are not even indigenes of Anambra State, and dump them under the flyover at Upper Iweka in Onitsha.

"Many of the people, we have interviewed are not indigenes of Anambra State. Some of them are from Ebonyi State; some are from Imo State among other states.

"It is an insult to Anambra State. We shall draw the attention of the governor of Anambra State to ask the reason for such an invasion of his territory.

"We will find out why Lagos State should invade Anambra State territory; and why Lagos State should dump people here and leave them helpless.

"We are here on humanitarian purposes and in response to an emergency. From  what we discovered here, this is a human emergency and a human callousness."

Katchy, however, promised that the society would move the destitute to the Anambra State Social Welfare Centre in Onitsha South Local Government for rehabilitation.

The Lagos State Government had dumped another set of beggars at Upper Iweka late last year.

Calls made to the mobile phone of the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, for his reaction, did not go through.

He also did not respond to a text message sent to him by one of our correspondents.

I'm not against this because of hundreds of crimes ibos bring from their states to SW, hence increasing crime rate in southwest.

The briton that was kidnapped in Lagos on Monday was the handiwork of the ibos, same with the wife of one honorable like that in one of the SW states.
A 25-year-old man, Chukwuemeka Benson, has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a British expatriate in Lagos State.
The suspect was said to have been arrested by a combined team of police detectives attached to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Okokomaiko area of Ojo, Lagos State, where he had allegedly gone to collect N7.5 million, being the ransom sum demanded.
Another member of the gang also identified as Ugochukwu escaped with bullet wounds, it was gathered.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, while addressing newsmen gave the name of the Briton as Dickson Lee.
He said the victim who came into Nigeria on July 16, 2013, from Amsterdam was rescued from the criminals' hideout at Okota area of the metropolis.
Manko who used the forum to advised members of the public to desist from paying ransom to kidnappers, said the gang attacked their victim at Mafolokun area of Oshodi.
According to him, the driver of the vehicle escaped with bullet wounds, while the assailants drove away with their victim.
"Based on the report made at area G, Mushin, the police swung into action. The victim was rescued four days after he was kidnapped. The Briton who looked pale and sick has been released to go for medical treatment," he added.
Explaining how the police were able to track the suspects, Manko stated that the police encouraged the victim's relatives to open negotiation with the suspected kidnappers, while the GSM number used by them was tracked.
Manko stated further that the payment of ransom by victims' friends and relations is making kidnapping to appear lucrative to criminals.
He added that efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang.

Comments from punch site

*Governor Fasola:
Let the igbos fix 'biafra'. We are tired of the igbos committing bad stuffs in the west. If we have any westerner destitute in Igbo land, please send them back asap. Be careful and honest when you do that because we have all your people building houses all over Lagos etc and westerners are not allowed to do same in Igbo land. No problem about that, we are good people here. but tired of the igbos atrocities.

*akara:
But on a serious note... My apologies to my Ndigbo brothers but Lagos and south-west is getting too over-populated with Ndigbos.. Ndigbos need to develop their homelands, and reduce immigration to Lagos...

Ndigbos need to hold their state governors accountable, Lagos state is not receiving FG allocation that is commensurate with the population in the state, while your various Ndigbo Governors are showing off kangaroo projects with no real development initiatives for Ndigbos..

Pls I am a yorubaman, Nigerians of every race and tribe are living in poverty and hardship.. But I am not a politician, so I have to start my contributions from yorubaland..

*MK SocioPolitical:
When there is not enough food to eat, brothers will start fighting brothers. A country is sweet to belong to when there is quality of life within it, otherwise, we will relate to each other based on our differences. Those who we elect to lead and represent us, spend all their time abusing us and committing illegalities against us. Our Police and Armed Robbers - no difference. Our army has only ever raised its guns in anger against fellow Nigerians. Recently our senate has confirmed that within our constitution, it is ok to marry under aged girls and thereby defile them by engaging in paedophilia. Everywhere u turn, hope has been stolen and opportunity murdered. Our leaders look and act so differently from us that we wonder if they are Nigerians. Even when we turn to God, dodgy and scam artist pastors block the way by engaging in false prohecies and false ministries designed to take our last dough. Na Wah Oh!

*Amadi Ikwechegh:
I guess what Lagos state government did was to drop them at the nearest access point to their hometowns thereby saving them some transport fare. At least the one from Ebonyi state is already closer home, same with Imo state. Aaahhh (scratching my head) my headache now is for the people from the north, it is a long mile from home though, but I guess the Lagos state government know that their people normally bring in onions and goats to head bridge hence their decision.

Now what is remaining is for the governments of the other states to reciprocate. Starting with Peter Obi start rounding up all the non indigenes in your state and start shipping them to Sagamu, from there they can find their way.... IDIOTS!

Instead of fleeing their homeland why cant they use their ingenuity to develop it so they wont have to come to another mans homeland and turn to nuisances

Well done Fashola.

Anyone who cant contriute to Lagos State should go back to his state whether its Ekiti, Ebonyi, Zamfara or Bayelsa

The fact remains that if Lagos state is tired of the Nigerian project, it should go ahead and secede today.
What Lagos is doing is CRIMINAL VIOLATION of Nigerian citizens CONSTITUTIONAL rights.

When Igbo got tired of Nigeria in 1967, we sacrificed 2 million of our people to try to secede. To me that is a demonstration of seriousness and bravery.

This cowardly backdoor secession won't work.

We Ndigbo really should hold the IG accountable because it seems that the IG is constantly making NIGERIAN POLICE men available for these types of open violation of the Nigerian constitution.

Our governors should hold Jonathan's feet to fire over the IG's indirect support for discrimination against innocent Nigerians by cowards who can't speak directly.

Azikiwe an ibo man dragged us into this dirty marriage at first, by aligning with the North. Another story please!

Gov Peter Obi should use this opportunity to make a clear statement(BTW this is the type of a situation that make me lament that NGIGE is not the governor of Anambra state, because he would know what to do). Peter Obi should talk to Jonathan about this; the inspector general of the Nigerian police should cease and desist from supporting these of operations against Nigerians.
In essence, this is Obi's moment to shine or remain the "girl" some people insist he is.
We need a MAN at Awka government house!

Nonsense!!! I don't blame them, if not for the Igbos Lagos would still be so backward like the rest of the western states. If Lagos wants to deport Igbos fine go ahead like Onlytruth already mentioned, we tried to leave Nigeria before but you'll came into our land and killed defenseless women and children just for us to be part of your Nigeria.

Bruv, don't go yet - going outside isn't the safe option, right about now. kettykin is coming with "cluster bunker bursting bombs," bro. grin grin

kettykin: Nice forecast by American intelligence, the North should put drones in their shopping lists, while the yorubas should include a nuclear power submarine that can stay under water for weeks in their shopping list. The biggest problem where the loyalty of the majority middle belt will lie..
The east and Niger delta should be working on a strong enough cluster bunker bursting bombs that 20 of them if well placed and detonated in lagos, ibadan, kano , maiduguri, kaduna, abuja can flatten the whole city in seconds and bring the war to an early end. The bomb can become an improvement of the ogbunigwe the ogbunigwe 2.0

kettykin: Biafra will definitely be a reference point in this war but unlike Biafra the niger deltas and the igbos are on one side whilst the core north and the yoruba are on the other side with the middle belt split and remaining neutral. The war might progress on 2 fronts the northern axis and the western axis ore /lagos axis.

The war will be fought with higher technology gadgets like drones , bunker bursting cluster bombs and local made submarines in the coastal areas, the struggle for the control of abuja and lagos will most likely be the premises of any war by 2015.

But come o, I'm now thinking that Gov Obi should retrieve back that 10 plots of land given to these people forcing out our people in north and SW, and settle these returnees there.
I hope the IG would provide Mopol to support this action too.
