Gun Men Left Six Men Dead In A Village Attack In Jos by maximunimpact(m): 2:57am On Jul 29, 2013 |
Up to six persons were confirmed dead on Sunday by military and local government officials in central north Nigeria's Plateau State, following an attack by unknown gunmen on a village in the state. Chairman of Wase Local Government Council Muhamadu Zakari told reporters in Jos, the state capital, that five villagers and one assailant were killed in an attack on Kumbur village on Saturday. Zakari said the attackers also injured several others. Spokesperson for the Special Task Force (STF) Capt. Salisu Mustapha, who also confirmed the attack, said the STF personnel, who rushed to the scene of the attack, killed one of the fleeing assailants. Mustapha said the attackers had wanted to use the village route to launch a heavy raid on Wase, adding that they were, however, repelled by the men of the STF. He said peace had been restored to the affected area. Plateau State is situated in Nigeria's middle belt where the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south meet. The state capital Jos was plunged in a pool of blood on March 7, 2010, when members of local Muslim and Christian communities fought each other in revenge for previous killings. The state has witnessed some bomb blasts and constant rifts between Berom and Fulani herdsmen, with many, especially women and children, murdered in cold blood in the state. www.china.org.cn/world/2013-07/29/content_29555489.htm |
