1. Installing only the applications that are necessary and useful to you. A lot of android applications contain embedded ads which consumes data.
2. Making use of a firewall application.
3. Switching off data when you don't need it.

I don't know abt droid VPN settings.

UC Browser can help you economize data.

I guess your textbooks are in Pdf format, so install 'Quick office' from your Assistant, or download Adobe reader.
