Few months ago, Dangote cement crashed the ex-factory price of a 50-kg bag of the product from N1,500 to N1,350. A step taken by the company after the directive issued by President Goodluck Jonathan in May which forced cement stakeholders to work together to bring down the price of the commodity.

From the same news I read in This Day Newspaper,
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, has said rather than targeting on price reduction in cement, which he said, would not go a long way before it crashes, the federal government is targeting production and availability of the product to force the price down forever.

Goverment can never force down the price of cement by any certain policy or the other than giving tax incentives and waivers on imported constituent and equipment, which in itself can never translate to a large price reduction. It will interest you to know that the price of cement from the factory is less than 900 naira but when freight is added then the prices add up to be what it is no hence price variation according to location. Also taken into account the cost of generating electicity for production and also the cost of gas and heavy oil used in the production of cement I thought if the price can come much lower as been expected now except the cost of energy is greatly reduced because cement production is energy intensive business. This are pointers to the fact that it is never about the producers but some other economic factor outside the direct control of the producers.

here in nairobi, most of their building constructions is done with cut stones and cuts off plastering externally, looks so beautiful and reduces pressure on the demand of cement.

this is coming after a nation-wide broadcast in 2010 that the price will come down before end of fist quarter of 2011. if not for ministerial briefing platform to tell the public what will satisfy them as usual what your ministry has been doing well... aganga agannga.

Most likely to happen in no distant future, the target is to be self-sufficient in cement production, every other things like price reduction and availability will follow.

Dangote only has an upper hand in the sector, there are other players like Lafarge, United Cement Company of Nigeria(UNICEM), BUA Cement et al ...

Dangote is controlling up to 60 percent market share. When you have goods and people arent buying, price will definitely come down.

Bros IBETO is not a cement producer rather it buys from around the world and bag for the local market. For the sake of Nigeria cement market knowledge; DANGOTE, LAFARGE WAPCO and UNICEM are the local cement producers. Even if IBETO goes out of business today it will never have any negative impact on the local market. WHen the cost of energy goes down the price of cement will go down except the producers want to start giving Nigeria free cement.

Hmmmmm, my sister, do u knw I went to mama nkechi's bukker the other day to eat Garri and my usual okro soup and she was telling me the same thing, I felt very sad.
