The police have said they will disarm vigilance groups in Anambra State ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Ballah Nasarawa, stated this on Thursday in Awka while inaugurating the Anambra Vigilance Group Code of Conduct and Identity card at a seminar organised for members of vigilance groups in the state.

The seminar was organised by the consultant and coordinator of Community Policing, Mr. Chris Udeze.

Nasarawa, represented by a Deputy Commissioner, Operations, Mr. Agyole Abeh, urged members of the vigilance groups to abide by the code of conduct and ensure that they submit to the Divisional Police Officers in their areas for effective operations.

The CP also warned them against misuse of the firearms in their possessions, stressing that punishment awaited any defaulter of the law.

He said, "We are going to do everything possible to withdraw your firearms pending when the elections are over so that we avoid situations where these arms are used for other purposes than the maintenance of law and order."

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, has denied reports that she had stepped down for the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, in the forthcoming governorship poll in the state.

Ekwunife, an All Progressives Grand Alliance governorship aspirant, said the clarification followed the text messages and calls she received from concerned people on the matter.

She said the reports and text messages to that effect were false and misleading.

Soludo, who joined APGA on Tuesday, had declared interest to contest the governorship poll.
