According to Wikipedia,Customer service is the service provided to customers before, during and after purchase of goods and services.

Good customer service provides an experience that meets customers expectations.

The customer service culture prevalent in Nigeria is appalling. From the public sector to the private sector, one only needs to see how apparent the disdain is for the very customers each sector is supposed to serve.

The attitude to customer satisfaction is totally non existent and provision of services to customers is conducted in such a way as to think a favour is being bestowed on customer.

No serious owner of a business in this country can afford to make customer king.

Why ?

The would-be Nigerian consumer is a naturally wasteful person. Especially when you run an online based business.

They want to ask a million questions over phone, email..and woe betide that business owner if he has a portal on a free chat platform like bbm or whatsapp. Some repeatedly make appointments they hardly keep.

Even when you put up a website with all the info a customer needs to make an informed decision, they would still come back after visiting that site to repeat the same questions you've already addressed and expect you to put up with that.

When your business number is published on the web. You get calls, ordinarily this should be a good thing but the Nigerian consumer want to abuse this too. Some would flash you 50 times and expect you to call back.

A lot of them have never heard of courier services before, and if you dare suggest that option some immediately think you to be a scammer.
They expect, that outside Abuja, Lagos, and PH you must also have 'office' in every tiny local govt area in the country.

Some want you to send them tesxt msgs of your bank details, price lists, office locations...a lot of them will never use this info ! If you are not discerning, you can spend a small fortune as a professional SMS sender on a weekly basis. grin

And when you show a measure of firmness against all this wastefulness, they get offended. They tell you, "is this how you treat customers ?" That's when you have to remind them but you are not yet a customer until you've actually done business with us.

Having said all of the above, there are still a lot of good, considerate and business-like customers who are a joy to do business with.
