nemesis2u:

u know i had a terrorist fuuking solution

what the countries fighting highly mobile terrorist scums, needs today is a low cost albeit innovation out of the box solution.

traditional thinking will only play into the hands of the terrorists.

the greatest casualty of war against terrorism is not the men/women but the economy of a country. terrorism is a long draw game , and the fuukers know it. as the costs rise countries r forced to negotiate one way or the other.

even if u a have a good turboprop , these come with highly expensive munitions and rockets, the foreign OEMs parade them as a means to earn ur hard earned money citing their efficiency, even though they themselves know that most of these r overkill's and outrageously expensive.

why should u pay pay more than a 1 dollar for sending a fuuking terrorist to hell , he does not even deserve 1 dollar to be spend on him.

my inspiration is the wart hog A-10

but we r going to be innovative ,

what i am proposing is a good high endurance turboprop , which good flight handling qualities and enough mass to absorb recoil among others.

now we take a turret ( 360 degree traversing) and fix it below the fuselage at the center-point. the aircraft fuselage will need to be be modified at the attachment points of the turret with necessary recoil dampers and such.

fix a dual feed 20mm caliber auto-cannon or even higher calibers if possible to the turret (within the limitations of the aircraft) which will pivot 180 degree in the vertical plane (imagine it in the minus Y axis)

fix a EO pod to the nose of the turboprop and slave it to the gun

for greatest efficiency a 2 seater will be best, the pilot , copilot/gunner will receive the same feed from the EO pod

the pilot will concentrate on flying above the reach of the ground based guns and circle the target area while the gunner will use the EO pod to scan for target , once located he will free the gun which will automatically aim/fix for the target as it is slaved to the EO POD , and will have the necessary ballistic calculations done simultaneously to achieve near 100 kill probability.

crucial role will be paid by the ammo selection , what i propose is one feeder with HE incendiary rounds with 1 tracer after every 5 rounds and the 2nd feeder with air burst type sub-munition releasing a cloud of tungsten cubes (much like AHEAD rounds but without the programmable fuze , it will come with ground proximity fuze) with 1 tracer round after every 5 rounds.

the beauty of this solution is that the aircraft will rarely loose the target since the turret is 360 degree rotating and the gun is pivoting 180 degrees vertically, any change in direction by the aircraft will be compensated by the counter rotation of the turret and pivoting of the gun, which means the gunner will always be able to maintain lock on his target/targets and keeping on engaging them a long as they r in range undeterred by the what the aircraft is doing in flight.

additionally 2 EO pods can be fitted , one for the pilot to help him search and locate targets and another slaved to the turret ( or installed on the turret itself).

and target selected by the pilot could be automatically feed to the turret EO pod , once the gunner finishes his current target he gets the location of his next target updated automatically.

on the pylons the turboprop will carry only the fuels tanks to maximize loiter time / endurance , and the addition weight saved will be used to carry extra ammo for the dual feed auto cannons.

turboprops firing PGMs is very expensive proposition

even dump rockets r not so accurate

if there r 10 technicals running about, do u think PGMs / rockets will the best option both economically and from the point of kill probability.

fixed guns/autocannons r available for turboprops but they require skilled and experienced pilots to conduct strafing runs, once u climb up u loose the targets (if u missed them) , also dives for strafing runs requires u to get in line with the target and lower ur altitude and which also reduces reaction time considerably , this jeopardizes safety, hampers situational awareness and decreases kill probability .

for my solution even if there r 10 technicals running about the aircraft simply needs to maintain the appropriate constant altitude while doing the necessary maneuvers like circling over the general target area, while the gunner with the 360 degree traversing turret together with the vertically 180 degree pivoting (downwards) gun will have all the necessary freedom of movement to maintain lock and engage his targets one by one.

also no technicals will be able to resist hit of a HE round 20mm onwards.

also groups of terrorists will be put down much more effectively by clouds of sub-munition from air burst rounds

or a combination of the 2 types.

so i give u ( theoretically grin ) a turboprop inspired from A10 warthog but without the fixed gun, but replaced by a gun system with 360 degree horizontal x 180 degree vertical freedom of movement to allow persistent, accurate and low cost target elimination.

no need to bother about expensive PGMs and even rockets, dumb or guided

i hope u all got the idea
is it good or wasted like the porn babes ? grin

Imo,you're the best poster here! You have real doable proposals and simple solutions-but then again you know your poo! Others would've lectured on a combi of Mwaris and 20 mn$ gunships. Ideally,it'd be a twin turbo;but can the Pucara/OV10 handle a 23mm 2 barrel or even a 30mm?

The WW2 Airacobra had a massive 37mm gun but it was fixed

I still see a need for dumb bombs and/or fixed gun/rockets;occasionally even these 5$ 'tards do dig in.

Even after the Kenyan deal, Egypt almost ended up in the same situation, IOMAX had to proactively get in touch the Egypts DoD before USAF awarded the contract 'again' to L-3.... IOMAX was tired of sitting and waiting to be contacted by USAF... it seems there is network mafia in the US arms deal network, they have infiltraded state department, DoD, Congress together with the Big defence contractors, they do insider trading ans ward tenderes to themselves with kickcaks exchanging hands...... If anyone want to buy US arms, advice is first go to the manufacture, then after you are satisfied is when you get in touch with the state department DSCA or whoever, with a reference from the manufacturer so that they don't reap you off

That last statement hahahaha
"MoD had submitted a sole source letter of recommendation (LOR) request to the US government for the AT-802L based on its misunderstanding of the situation."

Misunderstanding of the situation WTF, they said something similar with the Kenyan deal.... They even used archangel pictures when they were pitching it to Kenya DoD, only later to award the deal to L-3 embarassed embarassed

Many forumers here are totally naive about the realities of the int'l arms trade. No less than Eeben Barlow S African COIN expert stated many countries are bamboozled into buying wrong equipment. Not to mention our exchange rate which makes everything even more costly than they should.
Luckily, things have changed and India increasingly is a producer of all products. This is their version of a light attack plane, the HTT 40.

The reincarnation of an iconic battle rifle,DSA SA 58.

The carbine version of the venerable FN. Its still 7.62 NATO,but lighter and shorter barrel.
These are the variants.

The intended FN replacement, the FNC for some reason had nowhere the success of its original when it came out in the 80s (no idea why, though)and IIRC only Indonesia and Belgium adopted it.

If it were up to me we'd all have the DSA SA 58 cause in life the biggest lesson is go with what works.

DEATHMACHINE:
They have comms, what happened at gwoza was a result of radio interference due to rocky terrain.
The veterans group to which Leon Lotz belonged obviously has it wrong then. And so does this and other accounts:
The icirnigeria.org learnt two of the South African mercenaries were killed in what military sources said was in “non – combat circumstances” that still remains unclear till date. The two foreign fighters were said to have been killed by friendly fire in an incident that could easily have been avoided.

Our reporter spoke to troops from both camps, the team that took the shots and the 72 Mobile Strike Group, and they all explained that the incident would have escalated but for the restraint shown by the South Africans.

According to soldiers from the strike group, when the army planned to retake Baga from Boko Haram, they received a signal to report to Mafa and meet up with troops from 81 Battalion, with whom they would go to Baga. The signal was received on a Monday and they were to report the following Saturday by 12.00pm.

They could not tell whether the signal came from the army headquarters or 7 Division.
However, on Saturday, another signal came that the time had been changed to 4.00pm but by the time they got to Mafa, the 81 Battalion soldiers had left their location, apparently thinking the strike group was no longer coming.

“Soldiers stationed in Mafa pointed us to the direction the 81 Battalion troops went and we decided to trace their tire tracks,” one of the soldiers in the strike group said.

When they got close to the 81 Battalion location, it was already getting dark and before they knew it, they were being shot at, so they stopped.

“We were all shocked, even though the shots were warning shots into the air. We started shouting ‘friendly force, friendly force’, but they didn’t stop,” the soldier explained.

Shortly after, the soldiers claimed their vehicles, a REVA APC, were being hit with bullets and their front vehicle was hit by a T-72 tank, resulting in the death of the driver and gunner, a white and a black South African.
At that point, the strike group, particularly the Nigerian troops within the group, thought of retaliating but they were ordered not to by their white commander, General.

“Can you imagine for how long we shouted that we were friendly force but they continued shooting, even when they saw that we did not fire back? If we had fired back, believe me, we would have finished them,” the soldier said, anger still visible in his eyes.

It was only after the strike group defiantly refused to fire back that the shots stopped but by then the damage had already been done.

“All through the night there was tension between us. We could not sleep because of anger and also because we did not know what they might do,” he said.

By daybreak, ‘General’ ordered his men into their vehicles and headed back to Maiduguri. As far as he was concerned, they were no longer interested in the operation.

A member of 81 Battalion confirmed that the incident took place but said it was not deliberate. He said they mistook the strike group for Boko Haram members.

However, he said they were fortunate that the strike group did not fire back.

“When we saw their weapons in the morning, we were relieved that they did not shoot and when they decided to withdraw, we felt bad because they were heavily armed,” the soldier explained.

After the two mercenaries were killed, it was learnt that it took the intervention of the Office of the National Security Adviser to get the mercenaries to continue with fight against Boko Haram.

“Some generals were immediately dispatched to Maiduguri to personally plead with them. The army promised to compensate them for the death of their colleagues,” a military source said.

Correct marfa ! My bad ! although it shares close proximity to gwoza, there are established line of actions to determine friend or foe whenever an advancing force is detected including communication unfortunately that wasn't the case because 81BN elements couldn't establish that with the advancing force according to the account of my colleague cos I was at another axis at that time. Truth is what happened that night was unfortunate.
This conflict has installed valuable lessons

Moroccan AML-20. Interestingly this was the most heavily armoured turret ever fitted on the AML vehicle to date.

When they ordered these the Moroccan Army specified they wanted an armour thickness of at least 20mm on the turret face. The heaviest armour plate used on any AML up until that point was only 16mm!

To those saying the CH3 are not operational.
Boko Haram: Air force introduce drones and L-39ZA aircraft
Intelligence shows locations of insurgents
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Wednesday said it has introduced an Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) and L-39ZA fighter aircraft into the ongoing fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast.

During a press conference in Yola to give an giving an appraisal of the operations of the NAF in the first quarter of 2017, the Air Component Commander (ACC), Operation Lafiya Dole, Air Commodore Charles Owho said the introduction of the new platforms was necessitated by the enlargement of the NAF Area of Responsibility (AOR).

The additional platforms deployed would join the now ageing Alpha jets, F9 jets, Mi 35 helicopters which have been in action since the beginning of the war on the insurgency. Already the UCAV CH-3A has already conducted Air Interdiction on March 27, 2017.

Air Commodore Ohwo also revealed that several Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations by the NAF has revealed that following the fall and capture of the insurgents former headquarters in Camp Zairo, most of the fighters fled to the West of Sambisa stretching up to the Southwest of Maiduguri and into Yobe State, while some others had moved to the East and Southeast of Sambisa towards Gwoza Hills and Tagoshe Hills.

Owho said the Air Component of Operation Lafiya Dole has concentrated its air power the areaswith a view to further decimating the remaining BHT elements and facilitating the activities of own surface forces in the area.

In a series of air operations including Air Interdiction, Close Air Support for ground troops, Air Recce, Combat Air Patrol and ISR, the ACC said the Air Component has successfully prevented the regrouping of Boko Haram Insurgents while providing effective air cover for ground troops for clearance operations.

Among the operations conducted by the Air Component was the provision of daily air support for clearance operation in the south-west of Maiduguri at Boko Haram camps in Talala and Ajigin.

At the same location, on February 1, 2017, Alpha jets provided Close Air Support for ground troops to repel an attack from Boko Haram. Also, operations conducted by the troops of 21 brigade of 7 Division also provided ISR for the clearance operations in Ngoshe and Mabila high grounds.

Also, the ISR platform also conducted various operations in Arege, northern Borno where a platoon of Boko Haram insurgents was sighted. “Our ISR aircraft maintained visual over BHTs in Arege and tracked them as shown on the screen. The BHTs took advantage of poor visibility and the terrain to escape imminent air strikes.

“However, the efficient communication of the ISR ac with MNJTF forces eventually led to the dislodgement of the terrorists in a firefight. In this encounter, about 57 terrorists were killed and many injured while technical, weapons and ammo were recovered,” Ohwo said.
