frumentius: Then you might as well strap on a headgear on your face and navigate the tank yourself from your couch in Tembe, what's the AI for if you need to stay on the screen and shoot. It would be great if the robot tank navigated, tracked and engaged targets on its own while the generals drank coffee. Again, it risks chances of being frequency blocked, hacked and before you know it it's marching down Bloem guns blazing shooting Cheetah fans... |

MikeCZA: I agree on the "no loader" part, the Russians have been doing it for decades. As for the "no driver" part, nerds can hack things you know so you can't let a lethal machine run on its own. The only time I think robots could work would be when you're engaging targets at a short range like when a patrol is ambushed then a robot (within the patrol) engages the ambush to buy time for the humans to escape. As soon as the ambush is over, the robot joins its human bosses then it's switched off from automous mode before it could be hacked. 1 Like |

Henry240: To be frank, I don't see an MRAP in service right know that can compete. It is a very good MRAP I heard it is STANAG 4 ... It is home made so very cheap for us that's means large number can be ordered .. The only thing I am consern about is mobility we have only pictures but maybe I am wrong ... All MRAPs today has two variant one is 4x4 and a 6x6 because MRAPs usually doesnt have good mobility. On soft ground 6x6 will be better assuming the vehicles are of similar ilk, as the weight is spread out over a larger area. Also given the extra drive wheels there is more traction in slippery condition, and the rick of becoming cross axled is reduced, as you have to cross 3 axles instead of 2. The 4x4 and 6x6 are both adequate for the military not just one. |

Nok234:It is a Stanag level 4 vehicle. That's the manufacturer's specification, it is an official spec, not heresay. It is currently the most protected vehicle in service with the Nigerian army. Anyone saying anything else is simply talking rubbish. 6 Likes |

Henry240:Yeah you’re correct, in fact they didn’t just move the exhaust, everything below the passenger side door is different, the entire storage compartment for pic 2 is different, there’s less protrusion from the vehicle. The whole thing was reworked and re painted.

horlams: The problem here is the manufacturer claims. There's no way we could verify those claims. The vehicle had not been field tested, not blown or been fired upon but they're already claiming STANAG levels. For it to be STANAG 4569, it has to withstand 10kg of TNT and that is something no one has seen. |

jln115: It is indeed stanag 4 I wasnt sure but it is, there is 0 chance any MRAP can compete for the Category III MRAP in Nigerian inventory. The only think Im waiting for is the military to bring all changes required and we are good |

ActivateKruger: We Cheetah fans tend to shoot back . Really though, in a contested battle space, there definitely is room for an autonomous tank. Think of eastern Ukraine, where they couldn't perform air recce cos the Russkies shot everything down. Load the thing with sensors for battlefield surveillance and if destroyed, no lives lost. |

frumentius: So your idea is to have a robot tank for recorn? Please enlighten me how a 2,5m high vehicle goes on reccon in enemy territory? Unless Russians were very unsober on Russian Bear they carelessly drank before they were deployed then totally ignored a huge noisy vehicle with sensors on the open fields of Motha Russia. So me and you agree that the robot tank is for fun, not really practical. The CSIR should start researching on the next generation "bulletproof" glass as well, last night some thugs managed to penetrate reinforced glass on another N4 cash-in-transit heist. |

Got to love South African engineering. Why buy top tech when you can build it yourself? http://www.defenceweb.co.za/mobilesite/defenceweb/home/item_id-49580/ Marlin missile making swift progess The Denel Dynamics Marlin missile is at an advanced stage of development, with test flights of the 100 km range radar-guided weapon having already been carried out. Marlin is a radar-guided beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile technology demonstrator and the intention is to also use Marlin technology in an all-weather surface-to-air version. It is being developed by Denel Dynamics under an Armscor/Department of Defence technology demonstrator contract. According to Ivan Gibbons, Chief systems engineer at Denel Dynamics, various tests have been carried out, such as rocket motor firings and firing of a largely complete missile from the Denel Overberg Test Range two years ago using a ground-mounted launcher to test the missile's manoeuvrability and flight characteristics. The missile has also been fitted to a pod mounted on a South African Air Force (SAAF) Gripen fighter. Denel Dynamics is now heading towards a guided flight test that will use the radar seeker to shoot down a target drone. Gibbons, speaking at a presentation organised by the Aeronautical Society of South Africa (AeSSA), explained that the Marlin uses a dual pulse rocket motor for extended range (two fuel chambers and one exhaust nozzle). For long range engagements the first pulse fires and the missile glides towards its target before the second pulse fires at a later point in time. For shorter engagements, both pulses can be fired almost simultaneously. Top speed could be around Mach 4. Flight control is by servo motor controlled fins. Gibbons said there were many challenging issues to be dealt with when designing a missile like Marlin, such as high G loads (at least 30 Gs), vibration on the aircraft, electromagnetic interference, the effects of flying through rain, and thermal shock. As an example the missile has to operate in -50 degree Celsius temperatures while the leading edges of the missile can reach up to 900 degrees Celsius once launched. Denel Dynamics is working with Armscor on Marlin, as well as other entities like Saab - the latter is especially important since the Marlin is being fitted to the Gripen. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) did wind tunnel testing of the missile while the Test Flight and Development Centre (TFDC) and Denel Overberg Test Range have been used for test firings. Another important partner is Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), which provided the rocket motor. Although the Marlin is a technology demonstrator at the moment, it is likely that it will be used by the South African Air Force (SAAF), as the SAAF currently lacks a beyond visual range (BVR) missile and at present only has the interim infrared guided IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missile (SRAAM) in service, although the Denel Dynamics A-Darter SRAAM is about to enter service - final acceptance of this will be completed before the end of the year. Denel Dynamics also sees Marlin configured into an all-weather surface-to-air missile. Common subsystems will be used for the different variants of the weapon, with some components tailored specifically for the relevant application of the missile. Although Marlin is fully funded by the Department of Defence via Armscor, Denel Dynamics is looking for an international partner to collaborate with during the future development programme. 5 Likes
