frumentius: Nigeria has 2 variants of the C-130 in service. The stretch(H) variant and standard variant. The stretch is classified as heavy lift, while the standard and G222's are considered medium. |

Henry120: for once you are right, AN-70 is cheaper, slings more cargo and has a longer range But apart from raw stats, the A400M has an advantage in "hidden" benefits - for example each A400M comes with tanker capabilities, fy-by-wire, threat warning, EW capabilities and despite the smaller load capacity, its internal volume is massive - you can fit a Paladin SPG inside of one And the maintenance abilities are utterly astounding- 15 days flying with ZERO maintenance, 150 days without scheduled maintenance (stuff that will require it to be grounded) and only 84 days of scheduled maintenance for every 12 years of flying (meaning that over a 12 year period, your A400M will be grounded only 0.019% of the time) You must admit that those are stunningly impressive stats Thats the edge that the A400M has. BUUT Birds of this size are under-utilized. The USAF did a study that found that even their smaller C-130's were on average 40% underutilized for their operations (only 60% of its capacity for cargo was used) - or something like that (i remember only bits and pieces from something I read a very long time ago) Nigeria and South Africa should both rather focus on building decent light lift capacity before it even considers medium and semi-strategic lift. Both countries would profit more in terms of improved capabilities from a fleet of 10 or so C-27J's/G.222, CASA C-295 or An-32's than they would from a handfull of A400m's or AN-70's in the dedicated transport role |

patches689: Mumu, i'm always right !! The AN-70 is a much better plane than the C-130J, has many advantages over the A-400m, however the problem with the AN-70 is, with the crisis in the Donbass, the future of the AN-70 is looking very bleak. Asides the E.W capabilities of the A-400m as you claim, it's ease of maintenance, i see no other advantage it has over the AN-70, as those extra capabilities can easily be retro-fitted in the AN-70. I differ, the G-222 and much larger C-130's have various roles they carry out in the military. They are important lift capabilities a large military must have in service to be truly effective. In an emergency I would need my C-130's to be available to deploy men and resources in real-time. A fleet of 10 G-222's or casa's is like having only 30 A109's in service. In peace time they are okay, but in an emergency were considerable supplies are required, they are totally useless. |

. 4 units of Israeli, French, or Chinese small missile armed boats for Nigerian navy 2016. Confirmed order. Might carry Barak-8 missiles, Gabriel III missiles, C-704, or C-705 missiles. The Barak-8 missile offers space saving on deck with vertical launchers. http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=38643:african-customer-orders-four-super-dvora-mk-3-boats-from-israel&catid=51:Sea . 1 Like

jln115: My real source is NOT defenceweb, I just used that to show it may be Israeli boats. I said missile boats from 3 likely countries not just Israel. It's a confirmed order, 4 missile armed small boats for Nigerian navy 2016. Order is firmly confirmed. |

Henry120: Like i said, the A400Ms advantage comes in ease of service - 99.9% servicibility over 12 years is unheard of. Like I said, the US who is at war, found that their c-130's were 40% under-utilized in operations. Hence why they are looking for a small transport platform to improve efficiency And the A109 has many military applications - a highly mobile and fast light helo will allways have a role in the military |
