It seems Nigeria is also buying Helicopters from the US. The story about excess AH-1 Super Cobra could be true.

President Trump just confirmed the US will be selling helicopters to Nigeria and they will be delivered soon.

Maybe he is mistaking it for the Tucano, but who knows?

Potential AH-1 Super Cobra sale to Nigeria.

Longshot, what about congressional approval?

When @SternProphet tells you domething, know there is a lot behind it. The AH 1Z was on the horizon before the Super Tucano. Trump has a policy of making money from weapon sales and American aerospace companies are bringing all sorts of upgrade deals out of the woodwork. They may even offer the AH 1W super cobra (not AH 1Z) free of payment for some years.

Pls stop this. This one will pass congressional approval even faster then Super Tucano or none may be necessary.

Trump is a salesman. Also, if he wants to appease his base he needs to avoid war. If he avoids war the military-industrial complex will get antsy.

Hence, he needs to make sales.

Blackhawks would probably be more useful than Cobras or Apache's.

i am so disappointed we keep buying in paltry sum. makes me think we are a serious defence partner.

any why so much more of this same mi-35 we already have? why not go for a more sophisticated platform?

and why are we not talking about proper air superiority fighters?

I honestly hope so, my reservations comes from previous empty promises and eventual let down.

Common sense says we buying transport helicopter.....nigerian military lacks that capability ..... am thinking chinooks, black hawks or most likely hueys.....am willing to bet on hueys. We already have mi 25/35 we not going to usa for that.

why is that?

NAF lacks transport helo's.

Blackhawks, despite lower payloads, are much more nimble than the Mi-17. Its faster, has a slightly better combat radius and its rotor diameter is much smaller, allowing it to get in and out of smaller LZ's - which is very useful in the cluttered bush.

On the other-hand, the Mi-17 requires less maintenance and is easier to fly, which leads to lower life-cycle costs. It also has an impressive payload.

Nigeria could continue acquiring Mi-17's to make up the bulk of its fleet with a limited order of UH-60's to perform specialist operations, such as CASEVAC, CSAR and similar tasks where speed and maneuverability are essential.

Conversely they could try to get the best of both and focus on the Bell 412.

Either way, Nigeria needs more transport helo's - South Africa has 30+ and that is no where near enough. With a much bigger army, Nigeria should be aiming for a much bigger target. The exact number will depend on ORBAT

What paltry sum are you talking about or you are new here
The new 2 delivered is from the total order of 12 (of which 2 has been delivered before)

what unit is the guy on black?

The first two photos are reconnaissance commandos (sf).

In the first photo they carry the Denel Vektor R5 assault rifle with the FAB setup. In the second photo with just one guy a standard Denel Vektor R5.

we should get the mi-17 instead... more payload at lesser price.

American stuff is better. Take off , hover, fly, land , day in day out for 25 years. Just regular PDMs required.

The MI-17 terminator is what we actually need. 24 units minimum.
