@Henry: I thought DCD Protected Mobility and Mekahong had a JV to produce APCs in Nigeria, in the form of the Ikri - an improvement on the Springbuck. So why is Nigeria still importing the Springbuck from SA? PIC 1: Nigerian technicians training at DCD's facility in SA; PIC 2&3: Ikri APC; PIC 4: Springbuck

frumentius: How does the Springbuck do against the RG-33? IMO it looks like a Mamba with a fancy body-kit (same applies to the RG)

patches689: I would rate them thus: 1) RG-33 2) Springbuck 3) Mamba Of course most of these APCs have the Mamba as an inspiration. Ours are a bit long in the tooth though. I really like Osprea's Mamba MK5.

frumentius: What do you mean long in the tooth? Also, am I the only one who thinks that we dont need to replace the Casspirs and Mamba/Nyala's? - new engine - add LCT MC turret from denel + some Y3's and enough "fiddy's" for the fleet - basic comms upgrade - FVCKING AIR-CONDITIONING And bada-bing your are done! The SANDF needs to start thinking differently if we are going to address budgetary constraints.

patches689:Seconded!! Even by today's standards the Mamba and Casspir are decently protected against small arms fire, and still world leaders in terms of mine protection. Also aren't we busy refurbishing 1000s of Mamba, Casspir, Samil ect ect as we speak? After all we didn't import the Cubans to do nothing!! As you said, a small upgrade would do the trick, an add on armour package for mamba and casspir would be pretty awesome.

Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by patches689: 12:48pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
jln115: Refurbishing but not upgrading - basically just pushing up the operational levels of the fleet. With a new engine, more power could be gained... meaning more armor could be added whilst still retaining the baseline performance of the old vehicle |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 12:56pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
patches689:The Casspir, Ratel and Samil still use the old Atlantis engines as far as i remember, which are nothing more than a licence built Mercedes engine, so upgrading them to a newer Merc powerplant shouldn't be much of a problem, same with the Mamba which also use a Mercedes engine. |

patches689: Don't get me wrong; I'm in support of retaining both the Casspir and the Mamba. I do think though, that we should transition to the latest versions. Both still serve us well for our current needs but as soon as the budget allows... Interestingly, from chats with Recce Supply Unit acquaintances re a protected mobility complement for the Hornet, after all the vehicles they've tested from all over the world, their top 2 choices - all things considered and applying same criteria - remain these homegrown products: 1 Like

frumentius: We all read the same report. At 'Armoured Vehicles West-Africa conference', the J.V was reiterated, with 9 MRAPs built on the J.V handed over to the Nigerian police in Abuja. The remaining 45 were supposed to the built by Mekahog. I probably think, the guys who made the report on Springbuck APC's most likely made a mistake. Since we don't currently have a dedicated defence news portal in Nigeria, we most likely would not be able to get follow-on stories when defence related announcements are made. I don't see why projects like the IKRI and Proforce would be abandoned, as the government provides loans at 5% interest rate, including 5 years tax waivers to industrialist in Nigeria. |

frumentius: The Nigerian government, at Federal level is pushing hard to make sure than Infantry mobility is localised. It would be retarrded for Ikri to abandon local production of the Ikri. |

frumentius: So why where we having arguments over this last year? Do you have any close up photos of your hornet, and the MG position, isn't it a little forward for it's gunner. Your gunners need to stretch to use their 50 CALs. |

Henry240: The Nigerian government, at Federal level is pushing hard to make sure than Infantry mobility is localised. It would be retarrded for Ikri to abandon local production of the Ikri. Accurate records kept in SA re arms exports and imports, regardless of the recipient's opacity. I've asked around, and the answer will please neither you, me nor any other African who favours greater transparent and accountable intra-continental trade. It seems that certain states in Nigeria didn't want to deal with the JV because of their antipathy towards Mekahong. But because their police forces preferred the product, officials in charge manufactured reasons to bypass the upgrade (Ikri) and buy the base vehicle (Springbuck). A damn shame! |

Henry240: The problem I have with you is that you dont do your homework before passing opinions around. Literally took me 30 seconds to find a picture that showed that the gunner can easily access the weapon. And how do you respond? By posting a poorly sourced one in a vain attempt to defend your opinion, despite me just showing you to have been mistaken. And then, when I am again forced to show you the error in your ways - you insult me! Learn to control your emotions.

frumentius: Mekahog is a PDP affiliated defence company, as we are all aware, the PDP lost and the APC are now in power. It was always going to be an issue, however i felt, jobs, should have overridden party affiliation. The contract to supply 50 Ikri APCs, is a Federal government contract, not the states. However, going forward with proper lobbying, a decent agreement could be reached. Like i've previously stated, just like the previous government, this government favours localisation. It probably isn't all doom for the Ikri yet. |
