U.S. seeks to approve attack aircraft for Nigeria in Boko Haram fight

WASHINGTON, May 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. administration is seeking to approve a sale of as many as 12 A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft to Nigeria to aid its battle against the extremist group Boko Haram, U.S. officials say, in a vote of confidence in President Muhammadu Buhari's drive to reform the country's corruption-tainted military.

Senegal signs defense agreements with USA 04/05/2016

(Ecofin Agency) - Senegal and USA signed cooperation agreements allowing American military troops to rapidly dispatch across the West African nation in the event of a terrorist attack or an epidemic outbreak, such as in the case of Ebola in 2014. These agreements are inked in a context where Senegal’s forces are in alert after terrorists attacked Mali, Burkina Faso and most recently Cote d’Ivoire.

American officials however see an opportunity for their troops to efficiently take action in the case of an outbreak similar to Ebola. Indeed, Senegal at the time of the outbreak served as a back-base to transport the troops and medical equipment sent to Liberia and Sierra Leone. “The next crisis could be another epidemic outbreak, a natural disaster or a terrorist attack,” said James Zumwalt, USA’s ambassador to Senegal.

Though the government of Senegal said this agreement was the first of the kind in Africa, truth is military units have been present in West Africa for some time now, since the World Trade Center attacks in fact. USA has been gradually making some allies in the region as part of a preventive strategy. A strategy which has been reinforced since the fall of former Libyan guide Muammar Gaddafi as part of the former ruler’s military arsenal has fallen in the hands of Jihadist organizations in Sahel.

China's first manned electric aircraft RX1E ready for production

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/peoplesdaily/article-3346188/China-s-manned-electric-aircraft-ready-production.html

The RX1E is powered by rechargeable and quick replaceable lithium batteries. One 90 minute charge means that the aircraft can operate for around 45-60 minutes.

can fly at an altitude of 3,000 metres.

Its maximum speed is 160km per hour. max take-off weight 500kg, empty weight 270kg. It is priced at one million yuan or around £103,000( or US$163,000 ),with each hour of flight only cost 20 yuan or around £2 which will bring down the cost of training pilots.

No op sec is inforced in SA. I know of a case of a phone call made from a ship on deployment to catch poachers and ileagel fisherman. Next day there was a signal inquiring about it.

For the most part the sandf dont care about a face book pic or some pic at a parade ground. But a pics of ops arenot allowed. At least not with out permision. Some things are down right ileagel to report on. SANDF counter intel both at the branch level and defence intelligence is pretty good.

China Successfully Tests Hypersonic Missile
Seventh test of new DF-ZF glider tracked over northern China

China successfully flight tested its new high-speed maneuvering warhead last week, days after Russia carried out its own hypersonic glider test, according to Pentagon officials.

The test of the developmental DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle was monitored after launch Friday atop a ballistic missile fired from the Wuzhai missile launch center in central China, said officials familiar with reports of the test.

The maneuvering glider, traveling at several thousand miles per hour, was tracked by satellites as it flew west along the edge of the atmosphere to an impact area in the western part of the country.

It was the seventh successful flight test of the revolutionary glider, which travels at speeds between 4,000 and 7,000 miles per hour.

U.S. intelligence officials have assessed that China plans to use the glider to deliver nuclear weapons through increasingly sophisticated missile defenses. The DF-ZF also could be used as part of a conventional strategic strike weapon capable of hitting targets around the world within an hour.

Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Bill Urban declined to comment on the latest DF-ZF flight test. “But we do monitor Chinese military modernization carefully,” Urban said.

Rep. Randy Forbes (R., Va.), chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee on seapower, said China’s hypersonic missile tests are a concern.

“China’s repeated test of a hypersonic glide vehicle demonstrates Beijing is committed to upending both the conventional military and nuclear balance, with grave implications for the stability of Asia,” Forbes told the Washington Free Beacon.

Adm. Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, said Jan. 22 that the new hypersonic glide vehicle is among an array of high-technology missiles and weapons, both nuclear and conventional, being developed and deployed by Beijing.

China “recently conducted its sixth successful test of a hypersonic glide vehicle, and as we saw in September last year, is parading missiles clearly displaying their modernization and capability advancements,” Haney said.

China has kept details about the DF-ZF program secret. In March 2015, a Defense Ministry spokesman confirmed one of the hypersonic missile tests after the test was reported in the Free Beacon. The spokesman said the missile test was not aimed at any country and was done for scientific research.

The South African Air Force (SAAF) will receive two Gripen support vehicles with trailers under a contract being executed by Denel and Desert Wolf.

Although the project started in 2004, Denel only received the go-ahead to proceed last year and contacted Desert Wolf to come on board. The contract involves two Sprinter 519 vehicles and two trailers.

The package also includes a dome tent and trailer than can sleep four people. Two generators will supply power.

Hennie Kieser, Managing Director of Desert Wolf Consulting, said Desert Wolf received the order from Denel at the end of last year for developing the Complete Data Pack for the Gripen Support Vehicle and Support Trailer system (M-TIES). “The PBL Data Pack has now been completed and the next step will be the final design and manufacturing of two complete systems,” Kieser told defenceWeb.

Two Mercedes Sprinter vehicles have been procured by Denel and modification work on these will start shortly. Desert wolf will be installing various systems in these vehicles and will also supply two large LEO Wide body trailers. One Sprinter with one Desert Wolf LEO will be a comprehensive and complete Gripen support system, supporting the South African Air Force’s 26 Gripen fighter jets on deployments.

Kieser also told defenceWeb that Desert Wolf has received an export order for two fully equipped Desert Wolf Emergency Rescue Trailers, which will be shipped to Zambia in the next two months.

One of the most impressive part of the gripen is just how small the ground support is needed to keep one ready.

@ this point in the anti terror effort with the success already recorded and with Nigeria knowing the fact that the US is seeking for glory credits by selling its equipment to Nigeria, then I think it would be fool hardy to just settle for Tucanos. If the US is not ready to sell us A10 Wathogs then let them forget it. Nigeria will not continue dropping bombs in its territory forever what happens when we are done with Boko Haram will the Tucanos be used as trainers. Super Tucanos? Nonsense.I was in a class on intel management the other day and the good professor talked about the day a submarine showed up in Lagos how the guys in the Nigerian defense head quarters were almost peeing their pants because they knew nothing about its presence in Nigerian waters. Up until this moment nothing have been done about it. But I know that we may buy super Tucanos at the closing phase of a war that we fought the hardest parts with obsolete airframes with much success because there are those who must benefit from each spurious arms deal, those who do not know if there is a national interest to care about. If we need super Tucanos why not buy new ones from Embraer Brasil directly?

Why do you want the A10. The supper Tucano will ne just has deadly vs BH cost less to fly, requier less ground support in time, man power and resources, have a faster turn around and generally be more cost effective. You fighting coin warfare not trying to defend the west against a hord of soviet tanks. The Tucano was built for the type of war you fighting.

Well only 1 sub Saharan African country could respond to a sub. So dont it not a big deal you cant stop one. Since no one in your sphere oprats submarines.

You may be getting the same deal Afghanistan got. They got 20 Supper Tucano's spare parts and training from America.

There is no official confirmation stating we are getting A-29s. American hubris isn't fact. The only official order is for a squadroun (24) Super Mushak trainers to replace the Diamond trainer as the NAF's primary trainer.
