SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY COMPLETES LIVE FIRING EXERCISE



The live firing section of the SA Navy’s force preparedness exercise Red Lion saw on target hits from a trio of platforms at the weekend.

The Valour Class frigates SAS Amatola and SAS Spioenkop supported by the Heroine Class submarine SAS Manthatisi conducted a co-ordinated torpedo and missile firing against a derelict fishing vessel south-west of Cape Point, in the Pandora training area.

“The objective of the firings was to test the full live firing sequence within the vessels and of the guided weapons and to exercise a co-ordinated and simultaneous attack on a single target by a submarine and frigates.

“All the three guided weapons were launched and detonated successfully on the target,” the Navy’s Captain Zamo Sithole said.

The frigates fired Exocet anti-ship missiles while the submarine fired an Atlas Elektronik SUT 264 torpedo.

The guy who informed me about the UAV purchase, is also the same person who told me about NAF's intention to build MI-35M numbers to a Squadroun, 24 units.



If NAF actually goes through with it, I don't think we would see the MI-28N, primarily because, the NAF simply cannot afford it.


However, the Army is looking at getting attack helicopters, so MI-28N for the Army could be a possibility.

REVA FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle)

It's a decent vehicle that should be marketered to Nigerian procurement teams. Just like the REVA III, REVA V and REVA Ambulance in Nigerian military service, the FAV could be a fantastic addition.

Seeing that Namibian SF is currently testing one in desert conditions, Nigeria's military attache in Pretoria should be contacting ICP to request at least 5 test vehicles for Nigerian Army SF. After all, Nigeria is a client in good standing, with an hot insurgency to boot. ICP wins in that the FAV is tested in the battle-field, with feedback informing on-going development of the vehicle. Nigerian SF gets to play around with different configurations of the thing, including your commander's MG mount. I would include a mortar version and maybe a MRL mount. Also, some options for trailer-borne weapons mounts, like the SASF Hornet.

The M-346 is the absolute perfect replacement for our Alpha jets. It's the entire package for a jet trainer, a "Class A" trainer.


We never had a requirement for Air Superiority fighters like the SU-30. I don't know where we keep getting the SU-30 idea from, it just isn't a requirement. We've always had a requirement for a multi-role fighter, not an Air Superiority one. My top choice would have been 28 units of the Chengdu J-10B, however the choice of the JF-17 is also a very sound one.


I mean, it takes $12,000 to fly the SU-30 for every hour. That's ridiculously expensive. We don't have that kind of money.

I read today that NAF have sent over 500 personnels out for training in different parts of the world so that they can properly man the several equipments we are expecting.

I couldn't locate the source, but I will post it once I get it.

Yeah we have. The Alenia Ammerachi MB-399. The M-346 would be a perfect replacement for the Alpha jets, then we supplement them with 12 units of Super-Tucano.

The SU-30 is a multi-role fighter though, it just happens to be a very good air superiority fighter too. The SU-35 is the dedicated air-superiority fighter that the Russians have, to be complemented by the T-50 whenever serial production for that begins. The SU-34 is their ground attack air-craft to be complemented by the Yak-131 whenever that is fielded in quantity (most likely for low intensity conflicts) and Yak-152 (or whatever designation the attack variant of that aircraft gets). I am on the same page that we should go with the Yak-130 or any derivative of it, but at $15 million you think the stingy people we have running this government will even bring out that much?

EDIT: Also why the M-346 and not the Yak-130? you seem to favor the M-346.

The SU-30/27 is primarily an air-superiority fighter, designed to take on the F-15. This doesn't mean it can't carry out other roles. I mean, look at the Syria Campaign, the Russians use the SU-24, SU-25 and SU-34 for ground attack, while the SU-30SM and SU-35S provide escort duties for the ground attack aircrafts.


I favour the M-346 because we use a lot of Italian aircrafts. From Helos to fixed-wing and Surveillance.


We don't have a choice, sooner or later, we would need to replace the Alpha jet with another Trainer. The Super-Tucano can't be that replacement.
