Fidha254: You're confused, my son. The UN approves military action under international law. Doesn't mean they commit to pay for it. The US wars in Iraq and Afghan were UN-approved. When it comes to Somalia, the UN only pays for UNSOM, the political mission to support the nascent govt of Somalia. Amisom remains the AU's baby, with the EU volunteering to support it, in their own self-interest. Various other countries pitch in, for their own reasons. Like the US providing the airlift for the Burundi troops. Point is this, it's time Kenya kicked away the begging bowl. Ditch the victim mentality and act like the leaders of the East African Community that you claim to be. 2 Likes |

jln115: L-39za, that's what we've been using for lead in fighter trainer. Probably we ate misunderstanding what the Air Force mean when they say a replacement for the alpha jet. It might mean in the light attack role. For those who can afford an untested platform, we neither have the resources or time to go down that path. New fighter jets developed problems but eventually later blocks could be error free. |

Henry240:-my bad forgot about the L39s!! It was I that misunderstood! -The ARHLAC is basically fully developed, all that remains is weapons integration and so forth, anyway by the time NAF actually received the Super Tucano(or equivalent) the ARHLAC might already be in production! Also the ARHLAC is built by Africa for Africa from the get go, thus I wouldn't worry about it being untested! |

Henry240:Solely for interdiction, being used outside this envelope is testament to skills of both ground and aircrews, it wasn't meant to babysit ground troops. Henry me thinks this poster has some salient points https://www.nairaland.com/3453989/abu-alis-death-matters-arising |

jln115: On the trainer, here's what I got from defence blog today. According to East Pendulum, Sudan has ordered six FTC-2000 trainer aircraft from China. In addition, Nigeria has also will seek to purchase new Chinese training aircraft. http://defence-blog.com/news/sudanese-air-force-signs-ftc-2000-trainer-aircraft-contract.html On the Tucano, decision rests not on Nigeria per say, but on the US Senate. In my opinion the ARHLAC requires more time to develop. |

M14A1: He does make salient points, however we can spin a lot of "what if's" at this point, and the incident would still not make any sense. My problem is with the Army and always going in-circles. |

Photos of NNS karaduwa have been few and far between. A proper photo capturing the vessel hasn't been seen. The channels TV capture is the closet thing we've seen yet. Since that's hard to come by, here are photos of the vessel during construction. 1 Like

EXERCISE THUNDER BOLT The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today held a second counter terrorist exercise codenamed “Thunder Bolt” at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. As usual, the exercise objective was to ascertain the readiness of the NAF to foil terrorist attack and hostage taking at any of the nation’s airports. The exercise scenario centred on hostage taking by a terrorist group and likeliness of reinforcing to inflict damage on air assets and other facilities. The rescue operation was conducted in two phases. Phase One involved dropping troops on top of the airport terminal building from a helicopter and accessing the building from the roof top as well as deployment of assault and sniper teams at vantage positions around the airport to subdue terrorists within the terminal building. Phase Two was targeted at stopping would-be terrorist reinforcement from gaining access to the airside. The goal here is to stop external support from reaching the terrorists in order to safeguard air assets packed on the apron and other airport facilities from being destroyed. In a situation where airport perimeter fence has been breached and the Mobile Air Defence Team (MADT), which usually is integral to the standard airport defence arrangement, is unable to effectively contain a large number of advancing terrorists, the exercise incorporated provision of reinforcement to MADT by way of closed air support (CAS) strike by Alpha Jet, as well as rappelling of additional troops behind the terrorists in addition to mop-up by NAF helicopter gunship. The Exercise, which essentially is aimed at exercising the NAF’s counter terrorist tactics and coordination with other agencies was adjudged satisfactory by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Mshl Sadique Abubakar, and the Secretary to the Government of Lagos State, Mr Tunji Bello. While fielding questions from journalists at the end of the exercise, Air Mshl Abubakar was quick to add that areas of lapses or gaps observed would be addressed with a view to perfect subsequent exercises. Other agencies that participated in the exercise include the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) as well as Federal and State Emergency Management Agencies. Recall that the NAF held the first counter terrorist exercise in Abuja at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on 7 September 2016. The NAF plans to conduct the exercise in all the major airports across the country. |
