For a moment, i was wondering how an RCWS became a CIWS.

whats the difference between a rcws and a ciws ? grin

One deals primarily with close in air threats, usually involving an FCS and shot-correction

The other is a machine-gun with a camera that shoots dingy's.

Denel produces no CIWS. The infrastructure simply isn't there to support it. CIWS is an air defence system, although with a manual override it can be used as an area defence weapon. However it is not designed to be used that way.

The best gun for what you're trying to achieve, Area Defence and Air Defence is the BAE systems 40mm naval gun. It's a very beautiful weapon system. Rapid rate of fire et al.

I also like the South-Korean concept, adding a guided rocket artillery system to boats of that class.

edit : i thought u was asking about RCWS , sorry

.

Tnx mate dats wot am asking about.

@ henry,i tnk it will be good for efficiency and accuracy.

@ nemesis ,do your defence industry have any of such

soory at first i thought u were asking about rcws , later realized u meant ciws.

it is a good idea , depending on the requirements . since ciws has been implemented in land systems already for dual role of anti air and anti ground.

installing a ciws means hull penetration will be necessary ,
but the psychological effect of a high volume fire weapon will deter all pirates , and other light/medium caliber armed combatants etc

added benefit of anti air protection

some sort of tweating will be required to reduce the rate of fire , so as to conserve ammo and prolong barrel life , i actually like the idea .

why i like the idea
1.deterrent effect
2.even with a small time window of 1 second u will be able to pump out 500+ rounds and then scoot (run)
3.everybody wants to be cremated / buried with atleast some part of his body intact grin grin , so psychological effect is high here.

ak630 calibre 30mm, range 4km, rate of fire 5,000 rounds per minute
all these r good figures for a weapon if fitted onto a patrol boat

will just need trigger discipline
tnx mate that was my point.

@henry if we don't have d capacity we improvise. we need to invest in ciws cause Cameroon our next door neighbour are equipped with ththe C-series anti ship missile.

A CIWS deals with close in air threats, mostly suitable as an air defence gun, while the other is a stabilized medium caliber gun with camera sights used as a fire support.

what about rate of fire grin

also fcs and shot correction r also implemented in naval rcws , basically both naval ciws and naval rcws r close loop system but sometimes for redundancy sake they can take target cues from other sensors on the ship (open loop) if provided for.
ciws can also engage surface targets , its just a matter of software tweaking , space is a luxury on ships , so multi role systems r always preferred

My friend

You should be very careful before saying "Denel" and "does not produce" in the same sentence

So you do produce a CIWS. Is it operational?

If that's what you're talking about, then you made an error in your initial submission.

Offcourse, an RWCS is well suited for boats of any class, they are a natural progression from manned systems. NNS Karaduwa's main gun is a 30mm RWCS, so i was told, i haven't seen it yet to confirm.

They are completely different systems and not interchangeable, also different roles and different design and employment specifications.

NNS Karaduwa carries an RCWS.

You don't mount a CIWS on a patrol boat. If that happens, we would be the first in the world to do so. All modern Corvettes and above come with a CIWS as a standard defensive suite.

A CIWS has an explosively high rate of fire, 2 - 5 minutes of joy, and you'll need to manually reload the system. By that time the boat is sunk. They can engage surface targets, but they aren't designed to be employed that way.

In theory for redundancy purpose, but is difficult to see how effective a 20mm or 30mm RCWS with a slow rate of fire would be able to intercept an incoming missile.

Denel produces no CIWS.

What codswallop. In addition there's the Reutech Rogue RCWS also on the Valour frigates. And then there's Reutech's Super Rogue which is a CIWS in service with the Norwegian Navy.

The infrastructure simply isn't there to support it.

I take it you mean on your new boat?

Off topic: China's Navy seizes American underwater drone in South China Sea

A Chinese Navy warship has seized an underwater drone deployed by an American oceanographic vessel in international waters in the South China Sea, triggering a formal demarche from the United States and a demand for its return, a U.S. defense official told Reuters on Friday.

The incident — the first of its kind in recent memory — took place on Dec. 15 northwest of Subic Bay just as the USNS Bowditch, an oceanographic survey ship, was about to retrieve the unmanned, underwater vehicle (UUV), the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

As the research vessel was retrieving the glider, a Chinese ship that was already shadowing the Bowditch swooped in and "unlawfully retrieved it."

"They stole it," a U.S. defense official said. The U.S. established bridge-to-bridge communications with the Chinese but they responded by saying that they were returning to normal operations and then left the area.

The issue is being addressed through diplomatic channels, the official said.

naval SOP are strict , in practice short bursts r fired for 2-3 seconds not 2-5 minutes as u wrote.

also reloading for russian ciws happens below deck, new ammo drums r automatically engaged when the guns finishes its current ammo .

dont know about the western ones.

a 20mm or 30mm rcws can intercept an incoming missile if it is provided with a top of the line FCS with good sea clutter rejecting capability and equipped to fire AHEAD type ammo

That's were the difference lies, our's is a Patrol vessel. What you shared is a missile boat. Different types of vessels. If we want to build a missile boat, perhaps all these would be incorporated.

Thanks to the link provided by Nemesis2u, I've now found out boats can carry CIWS. However, I'm still of the opinion that a 40mm would be most ideal.
